Rewinding the tape stops after a few seconds and eject comes on. Also battery dies in 5 minutes.

1. When rewinding a tape, after about 30 seconds, it shows an eject icon and starts making a pinging sound. At that point, you have to take out the tape, put it back in again and then again rewind. 2. The battery despite being fully charged still dies in less than 5 to 10 minutes of recording. (This could be related to the above problem since this has never happened before.)

I took the battery out and tried to rewind it and had the same problem. That (with your input) tells me that the belt/motors/stuff... need servicing/replacement.

Not sure if the battery dying in 5 minutes is related to the above problem or not.

What's a reasonable place to get this kind of work done in Dallas ? I called Wolf Camera and they charge 250$ to even take a look at it.

I took it to Radio Shack (they charge a lot more reasonable amount to take a look at it). Apparently some card needs replacement & it will cost me around 200 $ to fix it. So I've mothballed it and bought another camera. :-(

I had this exact same problem, I was stressed as i have sold the camera and was just testing to ensure it still worked. I took this advice and used the charger plugged in direct to AC (bypassed the battery) and the camera now works. I will try recharging and discharging the battery a few times slowly. Thankyou so much for providing this advice.

It does sound as if your battery is giving up the ghost. How long have you had it? If it's an older type is it a NICAD. If it is perhaps it's built up a memory. Fully discharging and fully recharging 3 or 4 times can sometimes give it more life but if it's geting a bit old maybe a new one is in order. Have you tried using the power supply and bypass the batteries altogether? See if the same fault occurs. The halting rewind could be caused by a slipping clutch or slipping belt, Maybe it's time for a service. But tie the rewind problem to the battery going flat it sure sounds like a dying battery to me. By the way, the charger light isn't saying the battery is good and fully charged, it's merely saying it can't charge the battery any more when the light changes color or goes out or whatever indicates a full charge. Panasonic PV-L559 Camera is stuck rewinding the tape

It sounds like your camera is experiencing a mechanical issue with the tape mechanism. Here are a few steps you can take to try and resolve the problem:
  1. Power off the camera: Turn off the camera and remove any power sources, such as the battery or AC adapter. This will ensure the camera is completely powered down.
  2. Eject the tape: Look for a manual eject button or lever on the camera. It's usually located near the tape compartment or on the side of the camera. Press or slide the eject mechanism to try and release the stuck tape. Be gentle and avoid using excessive force.
  3. Gently assist the tape: If the tape doesn't eject smoothly, you can try gently assisting it using a small, non-metallic object like a toothpick or a plastic tool. Carefully insert the object into the tape compartment and try to guide the tape back into the cassette while the eject mechanism is activated. Again, be gentle to avoid damaging the tape or the camera.
  4. Reset the camera: After removing the tape or resolving any potential jam, reinsert the power source (battery or AC adapter) and turn on the camera. This can sometimes reset the internal mechanisms and restore normal functionality.
If the above steps don't resolve the issue, it's advisable to contact the manufacturer's support or a professional camera repair service for further assistance. They have the expertise to diagnose and repair mechanical problems with the camera's tape mechanism. Make sure to provide them with all the relevant details about the issue and the steps you've already taken to troubleshoot it.

Tape drive is not identified in the show device command on Open VMS platform. Tapes can be insertedbut cannot be ejected. Tapes seems to be rewinding, but doesnot wind.

Try to press and hold the eject button for 30 seconds.
If issue persists try to reflash the frimware revision with HP diagnostic tool LTT.

Cassettes not rewinding

The heads could also just need a good cleaning, either professionally or using a head cleaner dv tape. It's important to remember to always use the same manufacturer dv tape all the time. Evidently, Sony and Panasonic do not mix well, and the lubricants from those two tapes combined will gum up the works. If you use Sony dv's, always use a Sony head cleaner and vice versa. Cold can also cause those lubricants to gum up. Sometimes simply fast forwarding will loosen things up.
