No drivers needed for Vista either. But make sure that you use the USB cable included with the Nikon D40x. My Cannon cable (although it looks identical, produces a Device not recognized error) with the D40x. The Nikon cable works fine, of course... I now have them marked.

I had the same problem with my D40x - I changed my USB cable to a much more robust one and all my problems went away.
You shouldn't need a driver, most OS's will recognise it as an imaging device.

How to turn on Discovery Mode for Nikon D40 Digital Camera

There is nothing about a "Discovery Mode" in the D40 manual. I am not sure if this will work, but try resetting the camera to its default settings. Push the menu button on the left side of the LCD and scroll down to the pencil symbol. You will find an item on that menu called "Reset". Once you do the reset, see if the "Discovery Mode" is there. Frankly, I think you would be much better off if you read the D40 manual. In case you lost yours, I have attached a link where you can download it in pdf format.

I found a D40 with a nice lense.Where is the ser. no.? Could it be 3570426CE, or N16184, or D336907? Can you tell me who it is registered to so i can return it?

You have to contact NIKON to find who it is registered to.
