Yes update your software if u want to get rid from this freezing issue. I was also a victim of this so i just update my W660i software now my cell is working 100% OK :)
It's just a small matter..u need to update your phone software with a new one using Sony Ericsson Update Service..after that..u can play music uninterrupted..mine also..but i fixed with updating it.. u better try ya..

pls be check the hang up button isint totally not work ?
if not work,maybe phone inner keypad was spoil or inside dirty.
u need send for technician repair or servis.
It hangs because ur phone is having a hard time managing and organizing ur files.
For me it could be better if you upgrade to 1gig and ur phone will perform better.
For the reason that the files in your phone is organized well,therefore, faster performance.
