Have no idea how to add memory to my laptop

I purchased more memory for my laptop. I have absolutely no idea where to add it. I found the slot that already has a memory chip inside. I know this probably sounds really stupid to you, but I thought I was adding more memory on, do I have to remove this chip or is there somewhere else I install the new one? I am pretty clueless when it comes to this; however, I want to make sure I do it right and don't do anything to harm my laptop. I'm obviously not a tech-e so I will need directions in as basic of a format as you can provide for me.

I truly appreciate your help and advice.

Your laptop only has one slot for memory. If you have a Dimm in the slot , that is all you can have. If it is a 128 MB. Dimm. If it is less than 128 MB,You can add 128 MB memory.

Here is a link for 128 MB:

Does my laptop (Dell latitude d600) have a memory card slot and where is it?

If you are talking about a slot to Add RAM yes, there is.....there is a little panel on the bottom of the laptop that has a small screw you can remove and add memory.

If you are referring to a memory card READER (like a slot to read compact flash or camera SD cards) no, I don't believe a D600 has one of those.

I purchased 1 g of memory to add to my laptop. I am not able to do anything with the laptop due to the lack of memory. I can't afford to have someone add the memory and must do it myself. What can you do...

It's easy to add the memory yourself. Memory has a small compartment in the middle, you only have to unscew one screw to have access to it, the screw circled in the image below. When you put the memory in you have to put it to a 45 degree angle and press it down until it clicks in.

Then you close the cover and start the laptop. If you get a beep it means the momery is not installed properly.

How do yo get to the memory and can I add 1GB to the existing1!GB or do I have to purchase a 2 GB memory...thanks

Most laptops have 2 memory slots, if you have 1 Gb of RAM using two 512 Mb RAM then you need to replace them with two 1 Gb RAM modules. If you have one RAM module 1 Gb then you only need to add another 1 Gb RAM module. Try to use the same make and speed RAM.

I want to add RAM, but I haven't yet found the slots. Can someone tell me where they are?

The slot will be on the bottom (the part of the laptop that sits on the desk). Remove the screw(s) that are holding the cover and you will see the existing RAM (usually a green module about 2 inches in length).

Memory problem

you may have purchased a memory stick that requires more speed than your memory block can give. the speed for this lap top should be around 455-500 MHz on the memory block. if the memory stick requires more than that, its not going to work.

There are two slots for memory on that laptop and it will take a maximum of 2GB of RAM. The memory type is 1.8-V SODIMM DDR-2.

How do I download pic from a memory stick

If the memory stick is the right one for the media slot on your laptop, you should be able to plug it in the slot. The operating system will see the memory stick. Then you can drag and drop the pictures to the My Pictures folder.

If it is different from the slot on your laptop. You can purchase a card reader for about $20.

Install 2 RAM modules of 1 GB

The other memory may be soldered in. Check your manual and see if it has any information on additional memory. If you only have on expansion slot you may have to buy larger memory chips. like instead of 2 chips 1 gig each you may have to purchase a 2 gig chip. Computer companies usually make the chip installation easy to get to on lap tops.
