Denon dvd-2900 suddenly has music and background sound but no dialogue

Have checked - no subtitles. Tried a different scart cable, no improvement. Checked different DVDs, no change. However, I now get dialogue when I play the audio through my 5.1 sound system, but still no dialogue through Tv (with scart). Have checked - no subtitles. I'm no expert on the inner workings or how simple or complicated the problem is. But, is there another scart port or component audio port you could try perhaps? failing that, how about connecting sterio audio from the dvd player to something like an ipod or mp3 player to see if that works?
