Smeg microwave convectio/grill oven model SA987CX does not preheat

If your microwave oven doesn’t heat, you may have a problem with the high voltage diode or rectifier. This component helps provide the high voltage that powers the magnetron. The high voltage diode is located near the magnetron and the high voltage capacitor, so access will require removal of the cabinet. Disconnect the power and also discharge the high voltage capacitor to prevent an electrical shock. You can then test the diode for continuity with a multi-meter. Diodes are polarity specific and you should see low resistance with the meter leads in one direction and higher resistance when the meter leads are reversed. Most multi-meters will have a special setting for diodes or rectifiers. If the high voltage diode shows low resistance in both directions or shows no continuity at all, then it will need to be replaced. If you find the high voltage diode tests okay, then you will need to determine whether power is being supplied to the circuit. This is a high voltage circuit and further testing should only be performed by a qualified technician.

My sister operated the Magic Chef Microwave, Model MC0165UB, without any food inside and now it won't heat. What is the likely problem?

The diode converts the A/C power output of the transformer to D/C, doubling the voltage to nearly 5,000 volts. This high voltage powers the magnetron to heat the food. If the diode burns out, the magnetron won't receive enough voltage to operate, preventing the microwave from heating. When the diode fails, it is often visibly burned out. Inspect the diode and if the diode is burned out, replace it. If inspecting the diode proves inconclusive, test it with a multimeter that uses a 9-volt battery or put a 9-volt battery in series with the diode. When the leads are reversed, the diode should only have continuity in one direction. (Warning: The microwave oven can store a lethal amount of electricity in its high voltage capacitor, even after the microwave oven has been unplugged. Due to the high running voltage and the potential for electric shock, it is extremely dangerous to replace the electronic components in a microwave. Only a licensed technician should replace the diode.)

Where is the diode located on a whirlpool microwave

It is usually located right next to the high-voltage capacitor. BE CAREFUL! YOU ARE TREADING IN VERY DANGEROUS TERRITORY! MAKE SURE THE MICROWAVE OVEN IS UNPLUGGED AND WAIT 5 OR MORE MINUTES BEFORE YOU GO POKING AROUND IN THERE. Note: In some older microwave ovens, those with a vertically-mounted squirrel-cage cooling fan, the HV diode was located inside the fan housing.

No heat from my microwave

It's a major problem. The component that produces the microwaves has ceased to function. You may have a warranty fix available.

I have a replacement magenetron and diode for a GE Profile undercabinet microwave. Can you share the step by step instructions for replacing it? Model number JVM 3670

Disconnect the power source.
Remove the cabinet to reveal the wiring.
Locate the large transformer. Next to the transformer is the magnetron and diode assembly. MAKE SURE THE CAPACITOR IS DISCHARGED AS LETHAL VOLTAGES ARE HERE!
Disconnect the diode and remember where the connections came from, (a phone camera is useful for this job). Remove the magnetron.
Replace the magnetron and fit the diode pack.
Replace the cabinet and test by placing 1/2 litre of water in the machine, having first measured the temperature of the water.
Microwave for 1 minute.
The water should have increased in temperature by at least 10degrees Celcius. If it has, it is to specification and you have repaired your microwave oven.

My GE Microwave Oven is not lighting up, no interior light, nothing on the panel.

replace the fuse located under the outer cover, if new fuse blows, then either its a h.v. diode or h.v. capacitor or the magnetron tube is faulty

Whirlpool oven

Hi, there are three issues that will cause a no heat situation in a microwave. these issue are a failed Magnetron, busted cut-off fuse and, failed diode.

I recommend checking all these area that are located inside the microwave for faults.

The most common issue will be a failed Magnetron.

The diode and, fuse will be located on the noise filter assembly.

My oven started arching with micowave popcorn (4 or 5 different times). Now it will not heat. No error messages on the screen and everything else works. Thanks Dennis M.

Microwave not working but oven and grill do

Test the high voltage capacitor, the rectifier diode.or the magnetron.

The diode and capacitors can br tested. The capacitor must be allowed discharge before testing, or you risk to get electrocuted, even if power is off. Capacitors can get discharged by shorting their two contacts.
Replace the magnetron if the checks and all of the high voltage component tests are good, but the unit still does not heat.

All locations, and description of this parts can be located using the diagram here: Counter top.

Parts must be tested to find out what is wrong.

Remember that microwaves are potentially dangerous devices if not repaired properly, the job must be done by a competent person.
A microwave energy leakage test must always be performed when the oven is serviced for any reason.
