A 30 amp circuit breaker or fuse is NOT a typical size used for the protection of convenience outlets & general lighting circuits, especially in a residential setting. In fact the National Electrical Code (NEC) prohibits anything larger than a 20 amp breaker to protect a #12 copper wire and and a 15 amp breaker to protect a #14 copper wire. These are the size wires used to supply nearly all outlet and lighting loads in a residence.

It's not clear to me from your question if this 30 amp breaker is a double pole type that is providing power to a second, smaller circuit breaker panel and these outlets are fed from it. This would be in line with what the NEC would allow and what I suspect is the situation. I'm only going to get into this a minimal amount as more information is needed for me to be able talk intelligently about it.

I would shut off the loads that are connected to the 30 amp breaker. If that is a panel, I would shut off all the circuit breakers in it, then turn onn the 30 amp breaker. If it trips, then there is a problem between the 30 amp breaker and the panel. You may have connected line cables to ground or neutral - and vice-versa.

Can you please explain in as much detail as possible what is connected to the 30 amp breaker? Is it a single pole (120 volts) or double pole (240 volts) circuit? What size wires are connect to the breaker terminal(s) What type of cable is connected to it? How many wires are in the cable assembly or pipes? What is the size of wires? If they feeds a second, smaller breaker panel, where do the wires terminate - into lugs on the top or bottom of the panel or terminals of a circuit breaker? What happened or changed to cause this circuit breaker to start tripping? Is this part of a new installation - and if so, was the wiring done by an electrician? Was the work inspected?

You either have something wired wrong or you have a direct short in the system. Are you starting the A/C or the furnace? If it's the A/C, it could be a shorted compressor, capacitor, fan motor or it's wired wrong.

I have a new furnace and the breaker keeps tripping (20/30). It is a bryant westinghouse box. I think 200 amphes

1) You got a FIRE truck coming.

2) Wire is too small.
Problem is NOT circuit breaker.

3) Both 240Volt appliances on same breaker is a hazard, especially if space available in 200 amp service panel for more breakers.

4) Usually each 240V appliance has separate breaker.

5) Circuit breaker trips because of High heat on the wire.
If wire gets hot, it will start a fire inside the wall.

Electric code requires wire-size match breaker-size.

6) If you put larger amp breaker on same wire that is getting hot, then wire will get hotter.
Result: FIRE truck middle of night with folks jumping out window in glass-cut bare run across yard.

7) Each appliance has volts and watt rating on label.
EVERY appliance has label.

8) For example stove might be rated 8000 watts and 240Volt.
8000 watts divided by 240 volts = 33.3 amps
Stove would require 40 amp breaker and 8 gauge wire.

10) Do same calculation for new furnace.
12000 watt furnace divided by 240 volts = 50 amps.
Use 60 amp breaker and 6 gauge wire.

11) Summary: fixya wants you to be safe, and buy stuff showing in the ads.
Use a bigger breaker ONLY when bigger wire is also installed.
Call furnace installer, the installer should know to check safe wiring before installing.

Main breakers keeps blowing what is the reason i had the electrical company check there stuff up to the house said everything was ok no smaller breakers are blowing just the 200 main is it possible i did...

Add up all the amps from active breakers. Do they add up over 200? If not, then I suspect a bad main breaker. If they do, then you need a larger service box and or main breaker.

I have a Kenmore Series 70 Dryer and it keeps blowing the main breaker on the electricity panel - the main fuse is 20 amps do i have a dryer or fuse issue ?

Your dryer needs at least a 30 amp breaker to operate correctly. Changing to a 30 amp breaker should solve your problem. Hope this helps

LG Dyer blows 30amp fuse frequently

Hello davidkado,
There is a high probability that when you replaced your fuse box to circuit breakers that the wiring at the fuse box was retightened. If your dryer had been operating Ok for the better part of a year and then you started to blow fuses on a regular basis.. chances are the wiring coming from the fuse box tap was becoming loose from thermal expansion and contraction and that by changing to a breaker system.. your wiring was cut and reterminated to fit the breaker tap. I suspect you won't be having any additional problems...

Try looking at the junction box that it is connected to. Maybe one or more of the wires have burned off or come loose from the wire nuts. How many amps is the breaker? Most electric codes require separate circuits (Breakers) for each appliance. First turn off the breaker. There should be an outlet box of some kind on the wall or behind the cabinet. Follow the wire from the cooktop and see where it goes. Open it up and check if any wires are burnt or loose. If it was installed wrong I would change it. Most cooktops shouldn't be fused at more than 30 amps. Single ovens the same, double ovens up to 45 amps. The problem is if they used an old range outlet with 6 gauge wire and tried to connect both appliances to the same wire. This is hard to do without it coming loose.
