Very comm in with wd drives. You need repair the firm ware and it may start working for about 10-15 days. The fw repair has to be done by a data recovery expert.

SOURCE: cannot copy large files onto my WD passport

Your drive is probably in FAT32 format.  FAT32 has a 4GB file limit that is why your 5GB movie isn't saving.  You will have to format the drive in Mac OS file format (HFS) using Disk Utility.
Unfortunately once its in Mac format the drive will not be recognized by windows PCs.  What I do is have a program called macdrive installed on my windows computers so that they can access mac format hard drives.
i hope this helps!

SOURCE: The file system of my hard drive become RAW.

http://www.z-a-recovery.com/unformat-tutorial.htm

This tutorial describes the procedure to recover one volume when

  • the volume was accidentally formatted
  • Windows reports the volume is "raw filesystem", or "not formatted"
  • An external drive failed, either flash (so called "thumb drive") or an hard disk connected using USB or FireWire enclosure.
  • MFT is corrupt on the NTFS volume, rendering filesystem partially or completely unreadable
The recovery is done in seven steps, requiring about eleven (11) mouse clicks. Note: The older than current versions of ZAR might have been used to create the screenshots in this tutorial. We did not update the screenshots if there is no significant difference between older and current versions. If you see some option in the program which is not described in the tutorial, just leave it at its default setting.

plashkablue_left.gif Step 1 - Get, install, and start ZAR
plashkablue_right.gif box-top-l.gif box-top-r.gif Download and install ZAR just like you do with any regular program.
When you run it, ZAR displays the window like the one below:

  1. Select the appropriate hard drive
  2. Click "Next >>" for a list of volumes (logical disks) on this hard drive

SOURCE: Unable to access external WD 500 Gb drive: "You need to format the disk"

I have battled this for a few days. Your mentioning USB leads me to a possible solution.

I had a 500GB drive and put it in the USB enclosure and could only see 128GB one time, 138GB another. I found that external drive enclosures have their own IDE controller chips with older ones limiting the size of the drive they are able to "see".

The best test is to internally mount the drive (perverts will read this differently than intended and risk injury due to shock!) to make sure it can be seen. If so then the next best step is to spring for a new drive enclosure, one that supports the higher capacity drive. It worked for me! My old external enclosure's IDE controller could not handle the higher capacity drive and the new one was perfectly happy with it. Good luck! - Andy C

SOURCE: WD 500 GB Passport Formatting error

you may have a FAT32/NTFS format problem between your wd500 and your pc. or differently formatted partitions. right click on their device letters on 'my computer' and look at 'properties'. should tell you how they're formatted and # of partitions, etc.
just a guess!
good luck!

SOURCE: using Windows 7. 1TB

just a few ideas
click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
make sure the lead/s that attach to this drive have a secure seating and are not bad/faulty the light on only tells that its getting power it might not be getting enough power you might test the lead/s or
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems
click start control panel administrive tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select format
hope this helps

You can use the "digital image recovery software" to get your photos back. Thats what I did and I got the same error when I tried to access my photos . In my case I lost the entire folder structure but my pictures are recovered. I am trying to recover my folder structure and looking for the help. I tried atleast 10 different types of software and of no use so far.
