Use a business card. You can use it on any 2-cycle equipment and get a good gap. Or, take a microfiche card and fold it in half.

SOURCE: tunning specification for a stihl 028 chainsaw?

I'm not sure there are any "endorsed" tuning specs from Stihl as weather, temperature, fuel quality etc all contribute to engine performance.
Pictures of all types are all over the web.

As for the carb tuning procedure, maybe I can help?

Start with fresh fuel, all filters clean, and bar and chain installed. Also, fill the chain oil tank with bar/chain oil and VERIFY that the chain oiler works properly.
Initial fuel mixture settings (the H and L screws) should be 1.5 - 2 complete revolutions counter clockwise from lightly seated. Sight the carb's throttle plate and adjust idle screw counter clockwise until the plate stops moving.(Throttle closed completely.) Then go back clockwise 3 complete revolutions. This will produce an acceptable startup condition on a HEALTHY saw.
Clamp the bar in a STURDY bench vise and roll the chain with the shank of a screwdriver to verify it is clear. BE SAFE!
Choke the saw and pull the starter rope until the engine "burps".
NOTE: If no burp after 6 pulls, stop! Something is wrong.
After the burp, set choke to half and pull starter until it runs. The settings I gave should produce a slightly rich condition and a slightly high idle. (Chain will be in motion!)

Blip the throttle trigger and idle it down just enough to keep it running during the tune procedure.
Step 1) Using the "L" screw (closest to the engine), turn it clockwise until the engine smooths out or possibly increases RPM. Back it out slightly until the engine has a slight "LOPE" sound to it. (Like a drag car on nitro).
Step 2) Accelerate the engine to full throttle and go to the "H" screw (closest to the air filter) and slowly turn it clockwise and note the RPM increase. There will come a point when the saw will "Top-Out" and loose power. Not even enough power to turn an maintain empty chain's RPM! Go back counter clockwise to the edge of that point, and counter clockwise another fourth (1/4) revolution.
Step 3) Idle the saw back down. Again go to the "L" screw and repeat Step 1.
Step 4) Repeat Step 2.
Step 5) Idle the saw down until the chain stops moving completely. NOTE: Don't settle for a "crawling chain" condition. If the steps above are performed well and all else is healthy, you should be able to idle the engine down to a ridiculously low RPM and it will not shut off.

Hope this helps,
Dolf-

Stihl chainsaw ms441c put new coil on still no spark flywheel ok key way in place ground wires ok!

Set the gap between coil and flywheel to 0.010 inches, if possible disconnect the stop wire from coil to eliminate that part of the circuit. If spark, reconnect stop wire and check again with stop switch in the on position, should still have spark. If not there is a short in the stop circuit.

I have the older model which has the 3 bolt ignition coil. If I replace the coil, does the new ignition coil have to be 3 bolt as well? the 3 bolt replacement coils are so much more expensive

Coils are usually engine specific, the number of bolts does not determine whether or not it will work. If you really want your chainsaw to work correctly - buy the right part. It's a cheaper than a new one! Using the model number you supplied, I found them for under $50, which is about the value of an old 050 Stihl -wow, that's a heavy old saw. If you are still (Stihl ;^ )) not sure, call a Stihl repair facility. There may be an old timer mechanic who knows.

have the coil pack tested and if faulty replace it

Have 250 stihl chainsaw set gap on coil with business card the other side hang up set that side the other side hang up will a new coil help are is it the fly wheel?

Hello there, the correct 'air gap' between the magnet and the ignition unit is around 0.25mm (or 0.010") Use a feeler gauge to achieve this setting and use the power of the magnet to sandwich the feeler gauge between the magnet and both poles of the ignition unit. There should be sufficient clearance around the mounting screws to achieve this. If your still having problems check for sideways and up / down movement of the flywheel / crankshaft. If you have movement here and it isn't a loose flywheel on the crankshaft, the main bearings are probably shot.

Can't get a spark on Stihl 020 chainsaw. Tried another coil and switch module but still no spark

It is possible your flywheel has lost it's magnet strength, if you noticed it turn a blue. Can take off flywheel and replace with a good one. Or you can play with the gap on the magneto/coil, and insert a piece of paper between the coil and the flywheel magnets, to set for air gap.

I am trying to install spring for the pull rope on a 017 stihl chainsaw

If it is new this is much easier. The spring comes in a plastic keeper and only needs to be aligned and pressed into place.
If the spring is loose this is much easier as a dealer, with the correct tools. tighten the spring back into a col and set it in place.
Good luck

No spark and dont know the settings on the coil or

Place a business or index card between the fly wheel and coil, rotate until the magnetic attraction pulls everything tight together. Tighten the coil screws, rotate the flywheel until the attraction eases and remove the card. Ensure nothing contacts when flywheel is rotated.
I just checked a dozen or so Stihl saws, 0.008 - 0.010" is the normal coil gap. Card stock is usually 0.085 - 0.095"
If you still have no spark after assembly please reply below and I will happily assist you.
