There are many causes to that simptom (assuming you are using any version of windows):
1 - a disk full of temporary internet files, and loads of other junk used once by the operating system;
2 - a disk that has not been defragmented for a long time
3 - dust! it gets in all the crevices of the machine, and it overheats, making it slower and slower. Recently I vacuumed a computer at work and brought it from 85 centigrade degrees to 41 degrees, just by removing dust in the cpu cooler, and it brought a major improvement in performance.
And some other causes, but these are the most typical.

My Intel D945PVS motherboard has become very slow. I tried to add memory (4g) but no help. I think it could be the motherboard or cpu. I see the cpu running at 100% a lot of time. Can you help.

I will suggest to see running processes. It will show you what processes are running and which uses more memory (also cpu usage). It might be some virus or unwanted program.

System is slow.

Probably doesn't have much RAM. Call up Task Manager. See how many processes you are using 35-40 is OK. Check your CPU usage. At idle your usage should stay between 0% to 2%. Download a copy of Cleanup and Superantispyware. These will help you get the junk out.
