Hard disk drive not showing up on my computer. it shows there is USB connection but autoplay is not popping up.
See the Imation Support web site where you can find information related to your Imation Apollo hard drive.
If the drive is no longer being found in My Computer, have you tried it on a different computer and / or using a different USB cable - if it still isn't shown after trying these tests, then there is the possibility that the drive has failed or the internal logic board (which translates the drive connection (from IDE or SATA) to USB) has failed.
If the drive internal logic board has failed, then provided you can remove the disk drive from the Imation casing, you should be able to re-house it in a new portable drive casing. If the drive has failed, then it would probably be easiest to purchase a new external drive given current drive prices.
Testimonial: "thanks for the solution Steve. from what i understood in your second paragraph, I'm just replacing its skeleton and find a new body. I'm not sure if that will save it though my theory is sometimes i forget to "safely remove" it or my process is turning the power off and unplugging the USB cable. i know it has something to do with its internal drive but I know nothing much about technology. some forums suggests i can do "data recovery" but how can I do that if i cant even see the drive itself. others had something to do with control panel or device manager. i just don't know where to go. i follow some of the steps but seems irrelevant though. i checked the support site you gave sadly there are no FAQs yet or even driver downloads. sorry for my bad English, I'm Asian by the way. thank you for the tips Steve, greatly appreciate it"

if usb drivers are loaded in your system then this problem comes from dry solder of logic card of external hard disk. open the hard disk and just give some heat to the pin where usb interface is soldered, it will solve the problem.
or it may happen that usb data cord is broken internally.
or it may happen that in bios only usb 1.1 (normal) is enabled. check that and make changes to support usb 2.0 (fast) then save setting and exit the bios it may solve the poblem

Don't panic. You're files are probably still on the drive. I had the same thing happen to me as well only it was a WD My Book external. Anyway, like you, I booted up the computer & saw that Vista saw the drive but when I clicked on the drive icon, none of my files were to be found. So I tried turning the drive off & on, plugged it into different USB ports & even rebooted the pc a few times to no avail. The answer? I had recently plugged in a minidisc player/recorder (which the OS sees as another harddrive) & arealized that my motherboard (which is older) would not allow me to access more than 2 hard drives at a time. As soon as I unplugged the md player, my WD external worked fine & all my files showed up again. Hope this works for you as well & good luck.

One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)
A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.
1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability
2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)
3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.
4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.
5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port
6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you dont do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.
If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further
USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.
USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.
It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
You should also do this to cheack the drives connections are not bad inside the enclosure
Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"
If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

Sometimes this happens when the computer is turned off by force e.g. lightning/suspend mode. You'll have to use hard drive recovery tools in my oppinion which could cost quite a lot.

light on the HD blinks once when its connected to the computer where it should be simultaneous. tried different PCs and USB cables but it seems that the problem is in the HD. i can hear/feel it vibrates and is running but its not showing on the computer and auto play. i know my files are there and i cant afford 400GB of that being lost. I'm not the only one with this similar problem but they haven't found the answer either or the case is slightly different from mine. Help
It sounds like you will need to open the Imation Apollo casing and remove the hard drive from within it in order to progress further.
I found some hits on Google when I put in "open imation apollo drive" as the search terms which may help you depending on your exact model of drive.
Seehttp://www.instructables.com/id/IMATION-... for an article which describes how to open this particular model of Imation Apollo portable drive.
If you can connect the internal disk drive from the Apollo directly to your computer by either an IDE or SATA cable, then there is a utility program that can test and try to repair the drive if the problem is caused by corrupted data or bad sectors.
Hiren's Boot CD can be downloaded as a CD image file (.ISO) which then would need to be burnt on to a blank CD then the computer booted from this CD.http://www.hirensbootcd.org/
On the initial Hiren's boot menu, select DOS programs, then select Disk tools before selecting HDAT2 to perform the disk repair actions.
HDAT2 can take some time to complete depending on the size of the disk drive and the number of bad sectors or other errors encountered - the tool will attempt to repair bad sectors by reading, verifying, writing and re-reading / verifying the data.
thank you Steve. your latest suggestions are much easier to follow. detailed steps, i will surely try your solution. thing is i cant find any screws or "lock" in my HD, model is Apollo Generation II or Apollo ii/II, im not to sure if its II or just 2 but thats what it looks like on the Imation website. i tried means opening it but im scared i might rip it apart. no screws or anything. there is no solution in google for the certain model. but definitely ill try to hook up the internal drive directly to my PC if i can open it. :-)
One further thought - if your Apollo Generation II http://www.imation.com/en-au/Imation-Pro... drive draws all its power from your USB ports and doesn't use an external power supply - then are you using a Y connector USB lead that has two type A plugs on the end that connects to the computer to allow for additional USB power to be supplied to the drive?
Seehttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Nexons-USB-2-0-C... for an example.
If you are, then it is still possible that the computer is not able to provide enough USB power for the drive.
You could try connecting the drive via a mains powered USB hub which would then remove the need for your computer to provide the power.

hi Steve. i just wanna let ya know i've done great fixing my HD. no other cables used, no dismantling the HD, no other software requiring bootable device. i just used Acronis Disk Director Suite and run its Data Recovery. it somehow fixed the connection from my HD to my PC. all my files are untouched and played no problem. and it didn't took 2 minutes to analyze the disk to be recognized again. unlike what EASEUS made me do, i have to wait 10hrs for it to analyze and another 3hrs to recover and transfer my files to another drive. though it was able to recover almost all of them, some of my mp3s are affected. but Acronis just finished the job in less than 2min without any defected file. :-) I'm gonna share this discovery to this site as well. Thanks again Steve for your help! I greatly appreciate it.
