Vaporizer That Works?

I bought two Vicks steam vaporizers already and neither one worked. I need a vaporizer for a bad sinus problem. Any suggestions?

i have 2 vaporizers and no steam coming out of them. whats the problem?

I too, have bought 2 vaporizors and neither work. The first, I bought last year and it seemed to pumped out vapors quite well for about 4 uses. (not long enough to warrant the cost, but I had no urgent need so I stuffed it under a bed and forgot about it) then this year, I was in real need for one and bought another, the same kind (b/c it is cheaper than the others offered where I shop). It worked twice with a strong output of vapors and now it too barely puts out anything. I am wasting my money! Are these things just junk? Can I get a refund?? I am very dissatisfied.

Thanks MStout

We use our Vicks vaporizer infrequently and lost the instructions. We substituted Morton (iodized ) salt. It vaporizes great now. It's so helpful to have an online resource like this.

Have you tried adding salt to the water in the vaporizer? Sometimes the water needs to minerals for the humidifier to work...I add sea salt to mine every time I fill it.

Problems in a Vicks Warm Steam Vaporizer comes when it is mis-handled or when we buy non-warranted products. It is the best solution to spend money on the branded and cheap vaporizers.

We have a water softener and I think the water has too much salt and therefore, our Vicks vaporizer has too much steam. Any suggestion?

If your softener is working properly, you should never get any salt in your water. The salt is used only to reactivate the ionic media in your softener cartridge, and during the backflush cycle, all that salt is removed, down to PPM (Parts Per Million) levels.
In any case, even if you used salt water in your vaporizer, it would not increase the amount of steam that it produces. Salt water has a higher boiling point than fresh water. You would also notice salt buildup inside the tank as the water level goes down.
The Vicks Vaporizer works by using only heat to produce steam- the hotter it gets, the more steam it makes. The only practical way to get too much steam outside of a malfunction that causes your heating element to get abnormally hot would be if you live at a very high altitude where water boils at a lower temperature.
High humidity in your home will make it appear as if your vaporizer is making too much steam since the surrounding air will be less capable of absorbing it.
A slightly "off topic" note- if you chose the Vicks Vaporizer/humidifier and have children, you have made a wise decision. Because it produces water vapor by heating instead of ultrasonics, contaminants and minerals (such as salt, iron, calcium, etc.) remain in the tank and will not enter the vapor stream.

My vaporizer is barely putting out any steam...is there a way to clean this unit so that it will produce more steam? This is a Vicks 1.5 gal unit.

Is the water in your area soft? If so, add a few pinches of salt. Vaporizers boil the water by running electricity through it. If your water is too soft, no electricity and therefore no steam.

If you have hard water, and the unit must be cleaned, try soaking it in vinegar.
