I installed a new screen about a year ago and everything worked fine since then, until recently. At random times, my screen begins getting red pixels all over, then the screen goes to a (random) garbled color.

Open up Control Panel and navigate to IDT Audio Control Panel.
On the right hand side, there would be an image depicting the jacks available on the 1555. Left click on the respective jacks and change them corresponding to the 5.1 outputs.

Look closely at the bezel of the disk drive, you should see a small hole.
Straighten out a paper clip and push it, quite firmly into the hole. This is the failsafe release.

If this does not work, attempt to test the adapter on another laptop to confirm if it is working, or try a confirmed working adapter with your laptop. If same issue with another adapter, or if your adapter works with another laptop, it will be a motherboard problem.
