Worked good, then has gone black. What happened?

Camera worked just fine this afternoon. This evening I turned it on the take some pictures and it was black with a grayish purple line across the top and you can BARELY make out what the picture even is. Almost like negatives, but way darker. What has happened to my camera?

I tried, but it doesn't even show that as a setting. If I go to the "effects" it does an example of whatever the camera is focused on to show you what the effect does, and ALL of the example windows are screwed up with the same view-the black with the lighter line at the top

I even have reset the camera to its default settings, and it still is messed up

Sounds like you just accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This turns the screen on and off in photo mode to save batteries (you'd then use the optical viewfinder in its place). Just press the button one more time with the camera turned on.
