The Brush holder caps / covers for the K5 series whether Hobart or Kitchenaid by Whirlpool (after 1986 when Whirlpool bought Kitchenaid from Hobart) will fit the K5-A they just wont be flush like the older Hobart caps. They come in black or white.
New brush holders and brushes are available at www.nelsonezy.com as well as many other parts!
SOURCE: trying to replace carbon brushes on Kitchenaid
Check the brushes. They get caked up with burned flour. Remove the brush caps and pull the brushes out by their springs, being VERY careful to note the position of them since they only go back in one way. Measure the free length of the spring before pulling it out. It is critical that you write down the length sticking out with very slight pressure on it so that it is seated against the armature when you measure.
Clean the curved surface of the carbon brushes with a sharp knife being careful not to scratch the curved surface. If you have them installed wrong they will not go all the way in and will not contact the armature and it will not run. Measure the length, as done above, of the spring to make sure it is in correctly!! If it is not in correctly the spring will stick out 1/4 inch longer than it should.
Keep turning the brush until you have the shortest amount of spring sticking out when you press it in all the way then slowly release pressure on the end of the spring. You will know when it is in correctly since the difference in length is noticable. The curvature on the front of the brush must line up with the curved surface of the armature which runs from the front of the mixer to the rear.

If you look into the brush holder you will see a stopper at the botom ,(this is so when brushes are wore the spring is not driven into armature) .. the brushes have to be inserted so the groove is lined up , try that

Pull the back off and there will be two screws at the top of the Speed Control Plate and a 3rd screw at the bottom. Tighten the top two screws down. [email protected]. Let me know if it works.

Hi Gail. Kitchenaid no longer has a Parts List for your model. This means that they consider it obsolete. Do an Internet search for parts. You may get lucky. Good luck!

Didn't read enogh or pay attention the first time I replied to your problem, the threaded part that the cap screws into is also the same part made today for the K5 or K45 series mixers but it will require a complete tear down to replace. You have to take the motor out to put in new brush holders in. You will need a K5SS parts list for your mixer it will show you the position of the holders, it is not identical in parts as the manual you will look at is SS or solid state but the position of the brush holder is identical as is the part.
