To set a microphone you do not need to get to the speech folder..That folder is for other things ...
just insert the mic..and go to the control panel ..and open the sound manager ..In there select record ..and after that select the mic .
click on set default if you have only one sound card ..and not using any digital cables..and than configure...from the list select headphones or desktop mic...and go with the wizard ..It should show the signal being received and next when the progress line react on noises..
usually the mic should work right the way if it is plugged in the pink in for mic on a desktop and for laptop ..just open the speaker configuration and select headphone if it does not detect the mic..(this enables teh jack plugs for some laptops..
if you have a windows xp ..just double click on the volume icon on the bar ..and volume manager will start ..In the list look for the mic..raze volume and un-mute ..If the mic is not in the list ..click on options ..and properties..(top left ) ..and tick the mic case .This will display it and enable it ..

by the way ..after that start Skype ..and in the preferences start the device detect ..or configuration ..this will start some kinda wizard that detects the mic and the camera and let you adjust ..After that will work ..It is similar with the wizard fro call set-up in yahoo messenger..
but you still need to enable it if it is not detected.
Also make sure your sound card is installed proper ..and other sounds and such are working ..

How to detect microphone in laptop

Hi,

I think it would be better if we check that the built-in microphone is working on your machine.

Internal microphone

The internal microphone is located near the top of the notebook LCD display or near the bottom of the LCD display near the hinge. Use the following best practices to better capture sound with the microphone.

-Adjust the notebook PC screen to place the microphone in the best direction for receiving sound.

-Speak directly into the microphone. Avoid speaking away from the microphone.

-When using the internal microphone, choose an environment without background noise.

Testing the record function on the notebook PC

1. Click Start , then Programs , Accessories , Entertainment , and then Sound Recorder .
2. Click Record (the red dot) and speak into the microphone.
3. When you are finished recording, click Stop (the gray rectangle).
4. To play back the recording, click Play (the gray arrow pointing to the right).

If happens that the recording with the microphone have no sound we have check the settings.

Checking microphone settings

1. Click Start , then Programs , Accessories , Entertainment , and then Volume Control .
2. A Volume Control or Master Volume window opens.
3. Click Options , and then Properties .
4. Select Recording , and make sure Microphone is selected.
5. Click OK . The Volume Control window should change to a Recording Gain Control window.
6. Click Options again and then click Advanced Controls . If Advanced Controls is unavailable, then an alternate microphone is not available. Proceed to the next series of steps.
7. Remove the check next to Alternate microphone , click Close , and test the microphone. If there is still no sound, continue to the next step

Ensuring the correct recording device is selected

1. Access sound properties:

-In Windows XP, to access the sound control panel applet, click Start , then Control Panel . Click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices , and then click Sounds and Audio Devices .

-In Windows 95, 98, and Me, click Start , Settings , and Control Panel . Double-click Sounds and Multimedia , or Multimedia . The Sounds and Multimedia Properties window opens.

2. Click the Audio tab.

3. Under Sound Playback , select the audio device that is installed on the computer (there should be only one).

4. Under Sound Recording , select the audio device that is installed on the computer. It should be the same as the listing under Sound Playback .

5. Click OK .

6. Close the Sound and Multimedia Properties window and test the recording.

Feel free to reply if happens the steps I've told you is not working. Hope it helps.

Headet and desktop microphone problem.

first check if you have the right drivers on your computer for your audio, if you have audio like mine go to realtek audio manager it should be right beside the clock, then click on the top right corner it says device advanced settings it opens another box that gives you options for recording like tie up same type of input jacks, ie. line-in or microphone,as an input device. and it has another one separate all input jacks as independent input devices you could try one of those if you have realtek audio manager theres other options to that might help and if you dont have that go to recording devices and see if your mic is working properly and if its set to default device

Speakers wont work

Can you tell me what brand they are?

I can try to help without the brand name:

Go to start and hit control panel. Next click Sounds, Speech, and Audio devices. Click 'change speaker settings'. Click audio in the tabs. Click the droplist and select the speaker brand you have.

If that doesn't work, make sure the speakers are connected to the correct computer jacks. Green is the common speaker color, so hook the speaker wire into the green computer input.
Pink is microphone, so that could be the problem.

Hope I helped!

Pc microphone

i found a solution under the control panel. to configure some settings under the default view of the control panel, use the Ease of Access icon. this does not allow you to see the actual device. by switching to the classic view, use the Speech Recognition Option, which showed that i had 3 microphone drivers installed. all that needed to be done was to select the one i was using as the default.
