My Sharper Image ionizer after I cleaned the grid now makes popping noises and then the red light that says drying grid comes on most of the time. Sometimes the light that says attention required comes on. I can't get it to stop. Vacuumed it turned it upside down etc. cleaned it like crazy and still can't fix it.

The filter in this unit will not work, it makes the unit stay in dryer mode.

I have three units, the filter from a working unit works ok in this unit.

The filter is apparently the proble.

What can I do to the filter to make it work?

I have re cleaned the unit, blown compressed air and it still makes the popping and goes into drying mode.

When cleaning the grid, the plastic coating on the fins of the grid have become damaged, and the bare metal seems to be causing the arc and loud popping sound. Is there any way to fix this, or can I purchase a replacement grid?

You are probably aware that the ionizer uses a very high voltage (at very low current) to function. If you have used a cleaner of some kind on it, you could have made the grid sensitive to moisture.
I would remove the grid again and wash it thoroughly in distilled water to remove any residue that stayed behind, then dry it in warm air before reinstalling it.

I wash mine with warm water then wipe it down with paper towels, whip it dry outside and then let it dry really well . I have never had a problem. The "popping sound" occurs when it's not dry enough to run in regular mode.

Sharper Image Midi S1853 / NO BREEZE

I have the same problem and haven't been able to fix it. However, others have had the same problem and have posted their solutions. The sizzling sound is caused by electrical arching between the plates and one or both of the two tungsten wires that are run parallel to the plates (if you turn off all the lights and wait for your eyes to adjust to the dark before turning on the Ionic Breeze, it's a pretty cool light show!) Here are things found by others to cause the arching and what they did to fix the problem:

--dirt, lint, or tiny hairs stuck somewhere (usually towards the top or bottom of the plates or wire, and maybe in the grid contact points). Clean it better. Using canned air can help blow out the problem.
--water droplets. Make certain there is no moisture anywhere when you put the grid (plates) back in. Using canned air can help dry hard to reach areas.
--burn marks or melted plastic. These indicates a short circuit. Says dnewcombe1: "There is a feeler bracket that guides the two rear thin wires while the cartridge is being inserted. This "feeler" can melt and become disarranged." You can't fix this issue.
--build up on the ionizing wires. Clean them. It's hard. I took mine apart and used steel wool.

Check that there are no fine pieces of lint that are bridging the plates or the ionizing wires, to ground.

Check the contact points of the collector cell and inside the unit.

The light is caused by a shorted collector cell and associated components.

I have the Ionic Breeze Hybrid GP from Sharper Image. It has an "arching" problem in the lower section of the grid. Can this be fixed? How? The unit goes into "drying" mode and the fans still run, but I...

had the same problem, sparking in the lower section. i cleaned the grid blades on the filter with a scotch brite pad thoroughly in the area that was sparking and cleaned the corona wires inside the back of the unit gently by rubbing with light grade sandpaper. the unit runs like new. give it a try.

Making sizzling noise

Unfortunately Sharper Image has discontinued support on the product line. There was a recall going on with the product but since the company is chapter 11 right now, I don't think it is being honored right now.
What happened was Consumer Reports ran a test on ionizers, Sharper Image received a bad score and filed a lawsuit. They lost the suit and had to pay all legal bills.
EPA has reported that using ionizers in a house or business may be harmful to your health. You can read an article about it on their website.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to release a final report on all ionizers by the end of the year. Their decision may discontinue all sales of any ionizers in the United States. This industry should have been regulated years ago just by the EPA data alone and for some reason it has been ignored.

"clean" light

Sharper Image was giving customers a small rebate for the product since it was proven to be ineffective for cleaning the air by Consumer Reports as well data by the EPA.

This has caused a mess for Sharper Image that they went into bankruptcy as a result of it. The Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to be making a decision on ionizers at the end of year since there are hazards in the air from using the devices. It could be that ionizers are no longer sold in the US next year.

The industry should have been regulated and unfortunately the government never did anything about it until Sharper Image and Consumer Reports went to court on it.
