I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction as I live in a semi-remote part of Alaska with no technicians. I'm not totally unfamiliar with electronics (I'm an electrical engineer by trade), but I've never repaired a television set. I have a Zenith 52" rear projection TV (8-10 years old but the circuit board was replaced two years ago). Recently the image started to get fuzzy. It began by slowly fading fazzy and clear every few minutes but now it's permanently fuzzy. I cleaned the lamps and the mirror, and while it helped, it didn't solve the problem. The color is fine, so it doesn't appear to be a convergence problem. Any recommendations?

Chris Palmer gives detailed instruction on how to replace the convergence IC's. Go to his blog at: http://cmpalmer.blogspot.com/2006/11/fixing-my-own-tv-part-ii.html

you will have to go into what is known as service mode... have to have a code to get into it

sounds more like the flyback. What is the chassis number of your set. The flyback if thats what it is would cost under 50 if you replace it yourself maybe 150 if a shop does it. But post the chassis number as the chassis number would make it easier to try to figure out if its the flyback or not.

IS the screen white retrace lines ? Have you looked into the CRT lenses while they are on with a signal applied through the input to see if an image is displayed in the lens lens of the crt? Let me know what the answer is to these two questions and we will go to the next level.
