Thanks Rossiel. Problem is not related to childlock (I have the manual). Rather it is related to an as yet unknown factor relating to video/VR/finalising - I am continuing my search for a solution. Thanks Rossiel. Problem is not related to childlock (I have the manual). Decided I can live with the lock symbols. The main problem seems to be I was trying to play mpeg4 video which the recorder will not accept. I've now converted videos to mpeg2 and all seems well. have you tried resetting both machines, also if they where stored somewhere cool and then brought into a warmer area it may just be condensation, if this is the case leve the machine to acclimatise for an hour first.
To reset power up and remove all discs, then press and hold the Stop button on the machine and then press the power button, the unit will power off and will be reset to factory default.
On That Type Of DVD Recorder,( RW,R-R+). You Will Have To Finalize The Disk. Finalizing is Necessary When Playing On Any Equipment Other Than This Recorder.Even IF Your Other DVD Equipment IS ( VR ) Format Compatible You Still Need To Finalize The Disk. After Finalizing,You Cannot Edit or Record on The Disk,Make Sure It's In Video Mode.
Does the machine record on to + or - DVDR?
If it does both try each type. Also try high quality discs, some of the cheaper types won't work. Try it on different speeds too.
sounds like your laser is getting weak. repair is usually not economical. laser is about 90% the cost of the unit. hope this helps if it still plays but not record. keep it as strictly playback unit.
DVD-Rs do work with the RDR-VX500 ...... I had not recorded on mine for a few months after I ran out of the last batch ....... then I tried recording on the newer Sony DVD-Rs I had ...... would not record on DVD-R ..... turns out the instructions say the recorder will not work with any DVDs faster than 8x .... It looks like it's recording but it doesn't ..... then I noticed the newer DVDs were 16x ...... found an old 8x and tried it and it works fine ..... turns out the unit won't record slower on a 16x, it just won't record at all ...... get 8x and you'll be ok
