in your owners manual it should list the codecs that are compatible ( eg. avi mp4 ect ) try to make sure those are the ones that you play . also check there website to see if they offer any updates for the system itself . Sometimes they do , and it's just a matter of downloading them onto your usb drive and installing them into the unit . They will give you instruction on there website if this is an option . Oh and make sure you know the model number of the unit before you go to the site to make things easier for yourself

SOURCE: I have the Sylvania SDVD1030,
A codec works like a video compressor as well as a video interpreter. It takes the file and un-compresses it to what the player needs as well as how to generate the picture. Unfortunately there are literally hundreds of them. So normally you get a problem where a video was generated or saved using a different codec. The other part to this which is your problem is that you can use different codecs to create the same file and then you can change options on each of these. So you can find two seemingly identical videos and one will play while the other won't. On a computer you just load a codec software suite which installs hundreds of codecs. Unfortunately on a player like this you can;t load the, You are stuck with what it came with.
Having said or typed all that I ran across quite a few complaints about this player not being able to play mp4 or mpegs unless they are on a dvd disk. It will not read them from the usb. I would guess that the usb interface is not capable of the larger data rate a mp4 requires. So you may find if you burned the mp4 to a disk they would play but you won't be able to play them off of the usb.
I'd suggest either burning them to a dvd or trying a different file type like a AVI You can find most movies in avi format or you could use a commercial dvd versions which should play fine. So basically I don;t think you will get those movies or any mp4's to play off of the usb stick. You either need dvd versions or you will have to leave it behind. I'd try to find some dvds as that flight is a real killer as far as boredom goes. wish I a fix or work around for you but there isn't one.

I'm going to be late to this party obviouisly but hopefully someone else will be able to benefit from my diligent research.
You need to have the usb device formated as FAT32 and the videos will only work if reformated using
WinX Free AVI to MPEG Converter
It is freeware but watch carefully to dodge any toolbars it may install.

You have to make the DVD format yourself. A decoder program or some programs to burn DVD's have this.
Look on a DVD what map structure it has and what files it contains. No MP4
