This is a guide to help you install Google Chrome on Ubuntu Hardy Heron, there are other ways, but this is the one that works for me, hope it will help you.
Ready to give it a shoot?
Step 1 - Update WINE In order for the Chrome installation on Ubuntu to be successful you have to update your WINE version to 1.1.4. Type (or copy) this in to your command line - wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list sudo apt-get update
Step 2 – Get all necessary software
Winetricks is a script that will allow you to get all the necessary software you need for this installation. The last command below will install Firefox into WINE, this is needed for the third step.
You need to add the following lines to /etc/apt/sources.list file or
you need to make sure you have enabled Universe and multiverse
repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list file
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Make sure you have the following two lines save and exit your file
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy universe multiverse
Now you need to run the following command to update the source list
sudo apt-get update
Install mplayer using the following command
sudo apt-get install mplayer
if you want to open mplayer just type
gmplayer
or
You can Open from Applications—>Sound&Video—> Mplayer Movie Player Install libdvdcss2 and w32 video codecs in Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)
Support for WMV, RealMedia and other formats has been bundled into
the w32codecs package. This package is not available from the Ubuntu
repositories due to licensing and legal restrictions.
For Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) Users run the following command
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
Then, add the GPG Key using the following commands
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring
sudo apt-get update For i386 Users install Codecs using the following command
sudo apt-get install w32codecs libdvdcss2 For amd64 Users install Codecs using the following command
sudo apt-get install w64codecs libdvdcss2
Using above download locations you can install most of the mutimedia codecs for ubuntu. Mplayer Plugin for Firefox
If you want to install Mplayer with plug-in for Mozilla Firefox run the following command
sudo apt-get install mozilla-mplayer

Hi, ok first did you install the server version or the desktop version??? i suggest that you you go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading and follow the step from the version of Ubuntu you have. If you cannot log in the i suggest that you reinstall Ubuntu from the cd you have , now if you prefer you can order a free cd from from ubuntu and you will have the latest intrepid 8.10. any problem come back to me [email protected]
From what I know, both your motherboard and your hard drive work with Ubuntu. I would try the newest release, 8.04 (Hardy Heron).
Try setting the motherboard into AHCI mode rather than IDE mode (you should be able to change this under hard drive settings in your BIOS)
Also, the problem may be with your optical drive. Try swapping that out.
If you can't solve it from there, if you haven't already, try posting on the ubuntu forums.
Not exactly sure what you are saying... but you DO have a Duron 700? That is 32-bit. No x64 for you!
If that is not what you're saying. You are saying that you received an Xubuntu alternate distro from Ubuntu? Ubuntu comes in prepackaged distributions for i686 (i386, i486)-32bit and x64-64bit.
You can download the Xubuntu for free at http://www.xubuntu.org/get
Select the Hardy Heron i686 version. When you install, the installer "should" select the best kernel for your system.
Yes i have the same problem, sorry...
