is it a tv or rear-projector? does it brings out the sound?
on a tv it could be the chromatisation IC that is defectiven when it goes blank. why? because of a power surge in the electrical net the tv got too much voltage to take.
try to desoldeer the EPROM IC and power on the set. does this make the set goes normal blue screen? if YES,you can order a new EPROM IC.
or a new lamp. you could first replace the lamp. the screen might work fine for a couple of seconds, but then it fades away or deteriorates. This means the lamp is going bad.

HEY MASH-1ST ANY MAGNETS/SPEAKES OR MOTORS NEAR SET CAN CAUSE A CHANGE IN THE PIX TUBES PURITY FIELD WHICH IS WHAT YOU SAW. MAKE SURE ANYTHING LIKE THAT IS NOT PRESENT, THEN IF SET KEEPS ACTING UP YOU'LL NEED A DEGAUSSING CIRCUIT REPAIR, BEST DONE BY A QUALIFIED TV TECH.JOE TV
