Livescribe smartpen (Echo) not able to charge

When I plug the usb cable into the the pen it does not charge the pen the way it used to. One day it just stopped being able to be charged. The pen turns on fine, and then displays the battery low icon. When I plug in the micro usb cable, nothing happens. Up until it stopped working, once you plugged in the usb cable it used to begin changing the pen and display the battery chaging icon. Now, nothing happens after plugging in the usb

    Thank you, NinaE.

The usb cable is not the issue. In fact, I tried multiple cables that I verified as "fully working". It's an internal issue. I appreciate your response.

My smartpen does not charge when I dock it to the charging cable.
If your smartpen OLED display does not light up and display the shapes of a battery and a lightning bolt when docked to the charging cable, please try the following:

  1. Make sure your charging cable is plugged into a USB port directly on your computer, not a USB hub, docking station, keyboard, or monitor port.
  2. Make sure your computer is turned on or the smartpen will not charge.
  3. If your smartpen display does not turn on when docked, the USB port may not be providing power. Try plugging the charging cable into each of your USB ports on your computer. If the display lights up, leave the smartpen connected to the USB charging cable for 2.5 hours for a full charge. Afterwards your smartpen should function as normal. If the smartpen is not fully charged after 2.5 hours please reference 26011 - My smartpen is not showing a full charge even after leaving it docked to the charging cable for several hours / overnight .
  4. If your smartpen display still does not turn on when docked, undock the smartpen and try a hard reset of the smartpen by pressing and holding the power button for 10+ seconds. Press the power button once more. Your smartpen should start with the message "livescribe... Starting..." (wifi )"livescribe... Starting...Checking filesystem" (Pulse).
  5. f the smartpen that won't power on is a Pulse smartpen, which uses a USB charging cradle, try cleaning the contacts on the cradle and smartpen.

To do so:
  1. Take an eraser and rub the end on a blank area of paper to make sure it is completely clean.
  2. Without applying downward pressure that might bend the contacts, gently rub backwards (towards the Nav Plus) and forwards (towards the cable end) on the surface of the four metal contacts the cradle uses to connect with the smartpen.
  3. Rub the eraser end on a blank area of paper to clean it again.
  4. To clean the smartpen contacts, in a circular pattern gently rub the four metal contacts the smartpen uses to connect with the cradle.
If you have never been able to charge the smartpen using the charging cable or are having an issue with a smartpen that was charging before but has stopped charging, please let us know.

FIXED/SOLVED Similar Issue: Realise I'm very late to the party here but; I own a LiveScribe Echo 2Gb Smartpen which had a similar issue, sometimes wouldn't charge and was detected by my PC but not recognised, I solved this by carefully dismantling it and cleaning out quite a lot of dust with a can of Air Duster.

It is the display that is not working. I have 3 pens with similar conditions. I originally though it wasn't charging, it turns out you just cant tell, because the LCD is bad. All three pens experienced this around the same time. I believe it is a bad software or firmware "upgrade" that broke the LCD component, rendering (in my case) $500+ of unusable equipment in 3 pens (2 Pulse, 1 Echo). I use the product constantly, but no longer. The wifi version is completely unacceptable as it no longer has script to text conversion. Is there an attorney interested in a class action suit?

I experienced the continuous appearing of low battery icon even I recharged my pen. I tried the major resetting of pen but did not work. The solution I did was completely drained the battery until it automatically shut down right after the power on. Then recharged the pen. Everything goes back to normal and the low battery icon disappeared. > russcalub

I have a similar problem. I believe that the component to fit the USB receptacle in the pen itself has been pushed down with frequent use.But how do you repair that ? Maybe this helps a little.

Hello.

Sounds like the micro USB cable is defective and needs to be replaced. But, first try the cable on another USB port to be certain that the USB port is OK.

Hoope this helps.

Jabra extreme2 will not charge

All things can go defect. But to find out if it is your charger, cable connector or the battery you have to look very close. Perhaps you even try another charger and or try to charge an other headset.
When you are using this one for a couple of years now, day by day, perhaps it is time to start saving for a new one?

My screeen on livescribe 2GB pen does not work. Has been sitting idle for 1 year.

Welcome to Livescribe. The OLED has 'decomposed' sotosay.
It was either the display or battery that would fail. The only option I've seen thus far is buy a new one.

Display is black

Hi Livescribe user, i owned both the livescribe Pulse and Echo and they both failed with the same problem-a black LCD display. I contacted Livescribe via Live Chat which is a 24 hour service and i was asked a few questions one of which was to provide the pen's serial number. This is needed to determine if your pen is still under warranty. if you do have your original packaging the serial number would be found on the outside at the back. If not you would need to
1. Open your Livescribe desktop
2 Click on thelp menu
3. Click on livescribe support( internet conection needed)
4. A browser opens up
5. Click on support
6. Click on Customer Support
7.Click on item 28005-getting the smartpen serial number( blue text)
and follow the instructions.

To contact Live Chat go back to
3. As above
4 Scroll to the bottom of the page
5. Click on SUBMIT A REQUEST( Blue text )
6. A new page opens up
7. Click on Live Chat( bottom of the page)
I was quite impressed and satisfied with Livescribe's response. Both of my pens were replaced (valid warranty).
The Echo did fail a second time but i never pursued getting a second replacement and my Pulse works fine.
Hope this helps

LG Optimus L9 Screen blacks when charger/usb-to-computer cable plugged in.

sounds like you have a usb cable for charging only. You need a "2 way " usb cable, the kind used to transfer music and pictures to and from phone to computer. These one way cables are usually used in mobile chargering,as you don`t need to transfer things, just charge.Or you got wrong cable for your phone.

Spy pen not working

If you have a Spy Pen, sometimes it just appears to be either stuck with the light on, or dead and won't turn on. We wrote this report to show you some of the tricks we found to getting your it to work again.
1. Perform A Hard Reset
The majority of the time, just inserting the end of a paper clip in the opening below the status light on the back, and performing a hard reset, will get your Spy Pen working. Just bend a small paper clip end out, and insert straight into the opening. When you meet resistance, push lightly, and you can feel the reset button depressed.
Make sure it goes straight in, and not at an angle, or you could damage some of the components inside. Let go and try to turn it on.
2. Rule Out The USB Cable
If you are using a USB cable to either connect the Spy Pen to your computer, or to the 110V wall charger adapter, one day the cable will fail. If you use the USB cable because you can't connect the pen directly to the computer, try just plugging it directly into the computer.
Don't use a USB hub, as sometimes there is not enough power for the it; just connect it directly to the computers USB port. On some computers, use the USB port on the back, as front USB ports are sometimes weaker.
3. Rule Out The 110V Wall Charger
Just like the USB cable, the 110V wall charger adapter will also fail at some point; so if it does not seem to take a charge, try charging it for 3 hours in the computers USB port. If the status light is on while its charging, its getting electricity to charge the battery.
4. Put The Spy Pen Back In Video Mode
Several Spy Pens have switches to go to photo mode, or voice activation mode. If you move the switch to change modes, and you do not move it back to video mode, the computer will say it is not recognized. Try moving the switch back to the original position.
5. Erase & Reformat The Spy Pen
If the Spy Pen shows up as a removable drive on your PC, just right click on the icon and let go on "Format." Then check the "Quick Format" button, then hit OK. The drive will be erased, and reformatted. This usually takes care of any pens that make it this far.

How do i charge my kindle comes on screen battery flat

You kindle should have come with a usb cable (one end is different from the normal usb on things like pen drives) and also a little plug with a usb port on it. If you plug these two together, then plug the other end of the cable into the kindle, once you plug the actual plug into the wall, your kindle should start to charge (you can see this by a light appearing on the bottom of the device). You can also plug this cable straight from your kindle to the computer. This will also charge it (though slower than through the mains).

Memory is full and won't download. Have the latest update, but can't transfer to pen due to memory full most likely. Not sure what to do to get it to clear the memory and get the latest...

Hi i am glad to be able to help you with this. I had the same problem and this is what i did.... 1) Open livescribe desktop 2) Dock your livescribe pen. 3) Click on the audio tab on the top left hand corner. 4) Left click on your last audio download 5) Release the mouse and hold down the shift key on your keyboard and at the same time pressing the arrow up key until all of your downloads are selected. 6) Right click on the page with your mouse and select from the shortcut menu " Remove audio from smartpen ". This will remove all your recordings from your smartpen but they will be saved on your computer(livescribe desktop). Please note that the process of clearing your pen's memory takes a while ( approx. 5-8mins for 1GB). Your livescribe desktop may indicate that it is not responding but don't remove you pen. When your pen's memory is cleared it will be indicated on your desktop. You will also notice during this processthat a pen and a computer are highlighted on your pen's display.

i hope that this helps.
