My son has a gateway mp 6954 with the optical drive thats not working what kind of a replacement do i need to buy?

Optics problem check to see if mirrors are dirty. Will need to clean mirrors be carefully you can cause mirrors to fall out or become miss align . Buy a can of air blow them off . Turn off copier before you start then turn on and copier will move optics back into position.

Look on this page: Gateway 3610GZ. It's not on the specifications page, as you would expect, but if you go to Components > DVD drives > Main View it says Enhanced IDE (ATAPI) I would double check before buying a new one, though. Just take the drive out. There are usually only 1 or 2 screws holding it in on the bottom, and the drive should slide out the side.

You should be able to transfer your motherboard to the new case, but some things to check before you do:
How do the power switches and front audio/USB connections work for the old gateway? Are they standard or vendor specific? Are the optical drives in the gateway standard, or do they have special fronts on them? I have done what you are wanting to do several times, and often you need to replace OEM optical drives, and sometimes the motherboard headers don't match up with a builder case, so you do the best you can.
