Kenmore Washer Won't Drain

I have  Kenmore 70 Series Heavy Duty Plus Washer (Model 82370120 I think).
I run a load of clothes almost every night -- towels tonight, though not many. The washer filled with water, agitated, and didn't drain. When it finished (the timer went all the way around), I went to check on it and smelled something "electrical" -- like something had gotten hot. The washer is full of clothes and dirty water. I suspect the hot electrical smell developed when it tried to spin, but I don't know and won't risk spinning it again.
I've run the washer through its cycles -- it will agitate and will try to spin, but simply won't drain. Is it possible that the hose or something is clogged?

Thanks for the speedy answer. So... I should remove the clothes from the washer and possibly "open up" the washer? Any clues how to get into this thing?

You've been great! Is the door to access the filter on the back of the machine, do you think, or will I have to take the machine apart (remove console, etc)?

A picture is worth a thousand words...

The washer and dryer are wedged into a "nook" in my guest bath. I have no idea how they got them both in there. I know one man did it. Regardless, I managed to get the top raised on the washer. Here's what I saw:

Here's the inside the machine on the left side where the hose seems to exit:

Here's the inside the machine on the right side of the tub:

This is behind the washer -- where the hose drains out I think:

I lifte the hose out of the way -- this is a picture showing the hose exiting out the back of the washer:

Dont' ask how, but if I create some suction, I can **** water through the drainage hose (I thought it might clear the blockage, it didn't). The problem is accessing the rear of the washer where I bet the door to access the pump is located. While one man got the washer and dryer into this "nook", I'm not sure I'll be able to get one or the other out so I can get behind the washer.

Seeing the above, do you have any thoughts?

I've got clean clothes for a few days, but I'd rather not call a repair man. If the pump is clogged, I should be able to fix it myself...

    Thank you so much!

Timer won't advance . Tried a different setting and started to work but then smelled electrical overheat. Won't work on any setting now. Is the timer the only thing to worry about? How do I check for other problems

Yes, check the drain, could be clogged, or check the water pump assembly as well, the clothe could be stuck in the impeller.

the burning smell could be coming from a separate electric water pump and it can not turn that is why it is burning already.

collect the water manually from the tub and pick up the clothes.

there should be a door to access the filter of the water pump, find it and slowly open it up, water would come out. be careful not let water go into the center of the unit.

from that access cover, you could probably check the water pump.

    tnx again

no need to remove top console, trace the drain hose, that is the outlet of the water pump, you mat have to tilt the machine to see the pump from the bottom. or could be from the front, look for a panel that could be remove.

    tnx again,

thank you very much for the pictures. they were in deed very helpful.

it seems though that you are in a very tight position.

i guess you really have to bring the washer out of the nook and continue trouble shooting it outside where there would be room to perform what is needed.

you will need at least 2 men to lift it up and take off the room.

    tnx again

70 Series Kenmore Washer Agitates in Heavy Duty regardless of switch selection

Yours is a 2 speed motor. Does it spin in 2 different speeds. If so, then it most likely is designed with only to agitate in 1 speed. If it only spins in one speed, then your motor is defective

Kenmore 90 series washing machine, heavy duty, super capascity plus, quiet pak2 3spd motor w/5spd combo, when in spin mode, it smells like melted crayons

If drain hose is connected to a standpipe check that it's inserted no more than 4". You may be getting a syphoning situation that is allowing gray water to contaminate clean clothes.

Kenmore Heavy Duty 70 Series Leaking in the back

If you bought a new washer and you still have a leak, i guess it was not the washer but where it drains into. Sink or stand pipe has a leak. unless you are useing the old drain hose from your old washer. Dry up everything and look for the sorse of water with a bright light when the washer drains .

What is the date of manufacturing based on the serial number of my Kenmore 70 series washer?

Tyler,
It came off of the Clyde, OH production line the 26'th week of 2001.

Amazing, ain't it? Seriously... the info is embedded in the serial number. Here's the link to the code sheet.

Kenmore 82372110 70 series heavy duty plus won't spin

If it drains and won't spin you have to replace the direct drive coupling.

Kenmore 90 plus series: heavy duty super capacity won't agitate

this is the site to find out how to fix your washer.
you have a broken drive coupling.
it probably wont agitate or spin, but will fill and drain.
you need to remove 2 screws from the control panel, hinge it back and then remove the 2 brass colored clips that hold the cabinet to the base. once you do then pull the entire cabinet forwards to a 45 degree angle and pull it off the base.
then pull the 2 clips off pump and then 2 more on the motor. that will allow you to get to the drive coupling. you will find it to be broken.
replace it with part number 285753a for about 15-20 bucks.

Kenmore top load washer

Hi,

First check the oulet hose for any obvious blockages.

If you can hear the pump working fine, then check before the pump for any blockages (odd socks etc).

If the pump is making funny sounds or no sound at all, it needs clearing of any debris, and possibly replacing if faulty.

If the pump tests fine, but just doesn't work, ten the control board must be defective or a wire broken.

If this helps - please spare a moment to rate as Fixya! thanks.
