Mitsubishi VS-5041 50 Inch Rear Prorjection TV No image but there is sound!
I bought this TV 11 years ago and until last Friday (05/27/06), it was working great. Still a great picture and never been serviced! Friday, while watching TV the picture just went black but the sound continued on. Actually during the time it went black the screen displayed the 3 colors of the guns, red, blue and either green or yellow I can't remember, in 3 lines about a 1/4 of an inch wide in an upside down rainbow shape just for a second, then nothing but black screen. I was able to turn the TV off and back on again to see the picture again. After several hours it did it again. This time just turning the TV off and back on didn't work. I unplugged the TV for about 20 seconds then plugged it back in and turned it back on to have the picture again. This continues to happen but at a more frequent rate then the first few days of this happening. Any ideas of what it could be? Is this something I can fix myself if I could get the parts? Can I get the parts? If no, about how much might it cost to repair?

After 11 years???? OMG This set is a tired pup and should be put to reast. My experience with older sets and your complains are all capacitor problems and is only gonna get worse as the first time around repair will take several capacitors to repair. This set has no user serviceable parts inside so you should not attempt a repair suchj as this on your own.. This repair if you decide to go through the first time will be About 300 to 600 bucks the first time and cost will continue to raise till the sets put to sleep. Good luck

My Mitsubishi Model VS-60705 did the same thing a couple of years ago...A TV repair facility replaced the Video card. Any repair facility that works on rear-projection TV's should be able to repair your set. I bought the set on Jan 1, 2000. Coming up on 9 years and the set works like new.

Everything is worth fixing provided the price is right. However, in this case it's probably not cost effective to repair the unit. Start with the easier fixes, such as bulbs, etc. Even then, some of the components can be quite expensive, or simply unavailable. I would suggest getting a quote from a local repair shop in order to make an informed decision before you get to far into it. You could end up spending just as much to repair it as you would on a new unit.
