Convergence and wavey picture problem

I have 2 problems! First problem is the convergence does not seem to save, When I turn the tv on the convergence is far off, I can see the corners of the screen have a bowing effect. When I go to line the convergence up manually I can get the picture to a "fair" picture, but as soon I turn the t.v off then back on it goes back to the way it was. The second problem just happened recently, the picure now has a slight wavey ghost to it, the tv is still watchable but doesn't look that clear. The tv is about 2 1/2 years old. I would really like to be able to fix this myself.

Actually you have 3 problems. The two that you listed and the third which is: Apex does not support their units. Ask anyone who has tried to get any service. Your problem sounds like a bad digital convergence box. I fix this problem several times a week but on name brand sets. Cost is usually less than $100 for the part. Some problems with Apex equipment can be fixed if the part is a common off the shelf part. That is not the case with your problem. Apex equipment is cheap for a reason. All posts that I have read say that they do not last long and you can't get parts. That has also been my experience as a technician. We don't even accept Apex units for repair anymore. Next time spend the extra money to buy a name brand unit and it will more than likely be repairable.

I have a Mitsubishi WS-65869 65 in. Rear Projection Television and it has created a wavey line and has distorted the image. i have a picture of it i can send. Any help. i can send pictures of screen.

If you see separation of colors (red, green) in this wavey line most likely you have problem with convergence circuit. Two convergence amps have to be replaced. They located in a middle of the TV boards attached to big aluminum radiator and they part number starts with letters "STK".
I would recommend to let professional with this repair. Should cost you about $250-$300.
Regards.

I SEE DOUBLE THE PICTURE AT THE TOP LEFT IS WAVEY

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded over.

Blue and red wavey lines and distorted picture

Projection TV2_bing.gif sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung2_bing.gif, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith2_bing.gif, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D2_bing.gif
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash2_bing.gif focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.
