I'v spent $500. to have rebuild of ballast on this TV. Now I'm told that additional boards must have been damaged and that the repair facility needs to order a "kit" from Panasonic so they can hopefully find the problem. This will be an additional charge of $400. .
The set stopped working while I was watching it one day. Tried to restart but nothing the fan did not even come on but the green button on the front of the set would flash.
In your opinion is it wise to proceed with further repair or am I getting scammed?

Re: Panasonic PT 40LC12 40
Wild4art Did the service center replace these ballast and the set worked for you for awhile?? Or did they say that they replaced the ballast transformers and now the set needs adD.. If its the later yes it sounds like someone misdiagnoised the set ordered the expensive transformer and now are sticking them to you even though you MAY(?) not need them. Its a hard call without seeing the set. How old is this set? if its not to old I would contact panasonic and tell them what this service center is saying and have them investigate as panasonic is very strict with there servicers. Try the # I posted or look in your owners manual for the service department.. Good Luck

Hi, if you take off the back cover of the TV. Once you take the cover off there is a metal plate in the middle that has to come off. Behind the metal plate you will see a metal box with holes in it, thats the ballast board. It can be a number of things. It can be the ballast board or the power supply board. Take the back cover off and turn the TV on. You should hear the ballast board trying to fire. It will try at least 3 times before stopping. Is your lamp light on in the front of the TV.
Thanks for using Fixya, If you have any other questions please let me know.
Turn on the tv now, hear alot of clickings?Yes,the Ballast board is dead. The only function of the Ballast board is to ignite the projection lamp.Tries websites like Ebay.com,Partstore.com to buy a ballast board for the replacement.Instructions came with the board, how to replacing it,don't know?Try You Tube.com video.Type in ur tv make, model and the problems.Might have some bodies giving u advises or there are videos tutoring u how to do it.
Is the lamp light blinking twice every 5 seconds or once every 5. Once every 5 sec. lamp failure,...twice every 5 sec.. ballast or thermal fuse. The ballast is discontinued and must be rebuilt or purchased used,.....try Ebay. NO TV REPAIR SHOP IS GOING TO HAVE THE BALLAST! They may be prudent enough to check into and find the rebuild kit for the ballast. FYI a rebuilt ballast costs around $175.00 ,....the rebuild kit costs anywhere from $12.00-$55.00
DLP TVs use Ballast board it is what turns Lamp on! Take back off look for capacitors 1000uf16v if any of these are puffed up on top they are bad.Ballast board plugs in easy to replace, for good working board look up on ebay got one for 57.00 Good Luck with the repair.
His prices sound a little steep. Most ballast boards un $100-$200 Labor and service call should be $250-300. If you are bringing the TV to him, it should be less. Check with Panasonic for an authorized servicer in your area for a quote and maybe a little help with the cost of repairs. Sometimes, the manufacturer will agree to cover the part cost or more, so call them!
