Whirlpool Calypso Washing Machine - Please Help!

Please help me!

I have the same problem I just saw on this site and I am hoping you can help me. I purchased this machine 8 years ago for like $2,000 and never had a problem with it until 2 years ago, when all of a sudden the inside basket became "jammed" and would not move. Sears came out and replaced a "sensor" and the machine was fine, or so I thought. What I didn’t realize is that at the same time was that even back then the U-joint ( i thought these were only in cars mind you!) was broken and he didn’t tell me (whit it could have been fixed under warranty) and I wondered why even after his repair the clothes never really came out clean. The one thing the tech mentioned while he was here was that he was surprised this was the only repair I had had to have for the machine (the bin sensor) and that soon I would probably be calling for a replacement sensor pad. I laughed it off, because up until last week, I had no idea of the history of this machine. Little did I know how right he would be? Here we are two years later and I go down to do all my laundry, three loads in a row, and all of a sudden the "Start" button stops working. All other buttons work. Now prior to this about 2 months ago, I was getting the LD message for Long Drain and no one could figure out the problem as all my hoses and connections were clear. It was like one day it worked, the next it didn’t. But then, like Poltergeist, one day, I go downstairs to use it and full water pressure is back and I never had a problem with that again. Now since the Sears repair man was here again last week (I just let him look at the machine, once I saw the $678 bill for a new sensor pad and U-joint I passed on the service) and since the day he left the Start button worked again. I have done 6 more loads of laundry with no problem and I do unplug the machine after each load hoping it will kind of "reset' itself. Then today, with a load of laundry soaking in it and half done (I stupidly opened the machine to throw some more clothes in) the Start button stops working again!!

I have read your suggestions and want to try them as I think when the repair man opened the top of the machine where the sensor pad is, he must have tripped something to make it work again. It has worked for a week straight. The problem is that I have no repair manual for this machine and even though I read your detailed description, I am still unsure that what I see on either side of the inside of the lid is actually the sensors you speak about or how to really disassemble the back of the machine as you describe. Do you have a spec you would be willing to email me so I don’t do something to wreck the machine beyond the repairs they already claim it needs? You have no idea how much I would appreciate your help….I don’t have the money to buy a new machine right now and I am trying to keep this working for as long as I can. I am a single person supporting a mortgage and a household, I have to try and keep it working if at all possible.
