First u have to check that ur microphone is working correctly or not for this use hands free. If hands free works perfectly then then ur microphone speaker is damage u have to change it.

CONFIGURE TO MESSENGER
Open messenger - on top toolbar. Left click ( > ) Messenger > Preferences > Connection - Select 'no proxies' or 'connect direct to the internet' depending on the version of messenger you have make sure your internet connection and country are correct in the lower two boxes > Apply > OK
Click ( > ) Messenger > Preferences > Video and Voice Set webcam mic and speakers to show Default equipment Open Video and Voice Setup to test audio equipment Click 'Place a free test call' Check box 'Allow USB devices to access Messenger' Click 'Apply' click 'OK'
Before you can set your mic as default in any chat program you have to make it default on your computer first. Especially if you have a laptop where you will now have multiple choice for mics Vista audio set-up

When you go into a program to use your mic you will have to tell that program which mic is default WLM (MSN) Open menu > Tools > Audio & Video setup
