You might have changed the video setting to something else like "progressive" mode so try changing it back otherwise make sure it's not a s-video cable connection causing it.

Yes there is video format for our TV and dvd players. NTSC & PAL...
NTSC SYSTEM SELECTED IN TV & DVD PLAYER PLAY PERFECT NTSC CDS & DVDS, BUT IF PAL CD OR DVD IS INSERTED SUCH PROBLEM COMES. EVEN IF, THE DVD PLAYER SETTING IS KEPT AS PAL, AND WE INSERTING THE CORRECT CD OR DVD AND ALSO IT SHOW BLACK & WHITE PICTURE, ETC.... so please check your video system in TV, DVD PLAYER and check the CD or DVD you are inserting is of same video format you have set in DVD player.
Initially, pls check if your portable DVD has an NTSC/PAL selector switch, option or feature. If yes, try selecting the other. Should this not be corrective, pls post the exact brand, model and your general location/region.
Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
It appears that it has something to do with Progressive Scan been turned on. Progressive Scan is a feature built in your dvd player, wich by using it, it would give you a better picture//resolution on your tv, you need to use Component or HDMI cables to hook up the dvd to your tv if you want this settings, but if you are using composite RCA cables (Red,White & Yellow) and the Progressive funtion is turned on by accident, it may give you a split screen, black & white, or no picture problems. Also if you are using Component (Blue, Green & Red) cables, if one of them is unplug, the picture can be out of colors, or no picture. Check this things, if not, write back with more details about your set up.
I read about removing the cover and spinning the motor by hand. It was suggested without power. I found that I had to have the unit powered up when I hand-spun the motor, then everything worked perfectly... we'll see for how long.
Look at the back of the DVD player it should have a NTSC & PAL switch ,but remember to switch off the dvd player after you change it over to NTSC or PAL
