On newer operating system I think this one gets recognized but if it doesn't for you you may have to run the setup cd you should have got with the camera.
That will install any files or drivers needed as well as the image editing software.

Just go there and click on what you want along the left side of the screen. Make sure it is showing the x500.

Click on our cameras then the picture of your camera. For support stuff just click on the support link and chose the picture again. That will get you to the same pages as the first links. The software should detect when the camera is plugged into the usb. I do have one canon that refuses the play nice and won't do this so I just use a card reader to transfer the pictures right off of the cards.On the same page is contact information for support don't be afraid to call them and ask them anything.
