Tip & How-To about NetGear Computers & Internet

Having trouble accessing router's setup page?

Note: If you cannot access the router's page, check the computer if it's getting a valid IP address from the router. Click Start then type CMD on the Search box then press Enter. A black window called Command Prompt will appear, just type IPCONFIG then press Enter. It will display the IP address.
- Scenario 1. If the IP address starts with 169.x.x.x --- not getting IP from router

  • Scenario 2. If the IP address starts with 192.168.1.x --- getting IP from router
  • For scenario 2, since the computer is getting IP from the router, try to PING the router to test connectivity. Open the Command Prompt again, type PING 192.168.1.1 then press Enter. If you see the word reply 4 times then it means the computer is communicating with the router.
  • Clear the cache, cookies and history of your Internet Browser then try to access the router page again.

Can this router be used as an access point or range extender?

Yes it can you will have to get the ip address for it then go into setup and set to access point.

see generic setups

To open the set up page of the router of the router , one of your computer should be able to go online through the router.
It could be a wired computer or wireless computer.
If it is a wireless computer then make sure that the computer is connected to your own wireless network.
Do not change any wireless settings on the router using a wireless computer.
OK ! Now you have a computer online through the router and you want to open the set up page of the router.

First step is check the IP address of the computer.
Check the IP address and the Default gateway on the computer.

For Windows XP

START ==> RUN ==> type in cmd in the RUN box==> click OK or Hit ENTER . You will see a black window that is a command prompt . In the black window type in " ipconfig " ==> and Hit ENTER on your key board .

For Windows Vista and Windows 7

click on START ==> type in cmd in the start search box ==> enter ==> you will see the black window. Type in " ipconfig "you will see a lot of information. Try to find out the local area connection IPv4 address .

Note down the Default gateway number.

For MAC OS

Click APPLE icon in the right top corner of the computer. Go to System Preferences ==> go to Network ==> you will find the option Built in Ethernet or Airport whichever is connected. If you go to that you will find the Ip address and router Address.

The default gateway is the IP address of your router.

This IP address of the router will be used to open the set up page of the router

Now you got the IP address of the router.Open the Internet Browser ( Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari )

In the Address bar of the browser Type the IP address of the router.

Do not type http:// or www just type in the IP address only.

It will ask you for the user name and the password of the router.

This is the User name and the password of the router and NOT the wireless password. On a wireless router, there are 2 passwords. One is to access the router and the other one is for the wireless network.

For most of the routers the default password will be " admin " . for some routers the default password is " password ". For Linksys router the default password is admin and no user name.

Internet explored cannot display the webpage

Try checking if you have a valid IP address on your computer Click Start >> RUN>> type CMD and click OK

When you see the black screen type there IPCONFIG /ALL if you see 169.x.x.x IP address you may need to release and renew the IP or better yet turn off the PC wait for a minute or two and turn it back on... If that won't still work do a complete powercycle... turn off everything including the modem and router

After a few minutes turn on the modem and wait for the lights to be stable and then the router lastly the computer

jerelB. Can't acess my router

Hi,

I have listed possible solutions to your problem. Please try the following:

If the ethernet light on the router is not on, check if the cable is properly connected to the ethernet port of the computer and router.

If you cannot access the setup page of the router and it is not even prompting for your login credentials, check the ip address of the computer.

To check the ip address of the computer, go to the command prompt, and type ipconfig. (To go to the command prompt, click Start-> run/search -> type cmd, then click ok).

Take note of the default gateway, and try accessing the router using the default gateway.

If the IP address is 169.254.x.x then this is a possible problem on your network adapter. Try to reinstall the drivers.

Once you are in the login screen of the router but still you cannot access the router page, you will need to reset the router. Press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds then power cycle the router.

The default ip address of the router is 192.168.1.1. Type the ip address in the address bar of your browser.

Try logging in again without a user name, then the password is admin.

Please let me know if you need further help regarding this issue.

Windows XP CAN connect directly to cable modem and access internet, but CANNOT access internet when this same computer is connected to a Belkin N Router that is connected to this same modem. I have done all the things that are usually suggested without success.

Hi twilbanks,

from what you are saying, the problem lies very likely in the router configuration.
Since you have a cable (not DSL-) modem, the router should get it's IP address straight from the modem. There is a know issue with the Toshiba PCX 1100 cable modem. If this is your modem, see the information here.
I would suggest to reset the router to factory default, since I don't know what you have configured already. You will loose all your configurations (wireless, security, portforwarding etc.), but it's always better to start from a clean plate.

  1. Turn off your computer.
  2. Unplug all Ethernet cables (Modem -> Router, Router -> Computer)
  3. Power on the router. Reset it by holding the reset button in the back of the router for about 20 seconds.
  4. Connect the modem to the router with an Ethernet cable. (Router WAN port)
  5. Connect the router and the computer with an Ethernet cable. (Router LAN port)
  6. Power on the computer.
  7. Open a command prompt, then type "cmd", click "OK" and in the following window type "ipconfig /all" and hit ENTER. If your computer is set to obtain it's IP address and DNS automatically, your output should look similar to this:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : [Name of your Ethernet adapter]
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.XX
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1

If it looks different (IP address is 0.0.0.0 or 169.X.X.X), let me know. In that case we have to configure the computer correctly. Go back to the command prompt window and type "ping 192.168.2.1" and let me know if this command finished successfully.

Also - sometimes your Internet Service Provider has special requests in setting up your router, especially comcast or Cox. When you attempt to open a web page you may recieve the following message:
  • The page cannot be displayed
  • The page you are looking for is currently unavailable
  • The website may be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings
This is how to resolve this problem:
First make sure that you have a valid connection to the router and that you have a valid IP address.
(note: For a wired connection you should have a link light on the numbered port of the router to which your computer is connected. You should have an IP address in the range 192.168.2.x. To check your IP address, click on Start, Run and type "cmd". Click OK. Now type in "ipconfig" and hit enter. Your IP address will be listed.)
  1. Unplug the power cable from the modem for 3 to 5 minutes
  2. Open a Web Browser
  3. In the address bar type http://192.168.2.1
  4. Click on Connection Type in the left hand column under Internet WAN heading
  5. Enter your password if any and click Submit (Default = Leave blank)
  6. Follow the on screen instructions.
  7. Once complete, click on the Home link at the upper right of the screen.
  8. It should now show Connected as the Internet Status at the top right hand corner of the web page.
If this did not solve your problem or you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.
