If a CD player doesn't work there isn't much the user can do - putting in a disc the mechanism should be heard to spin; if it doesn't spin the process will go no further and it is a task for the repair shop.
If the disc does spin the laser will try to read the disc and if it fails it will be worth cleaning the lens but again if that doesn't work the repair shop beckons.

This is usually cased because the unit is sensing that your spindle motor is not turning or turning at a slower speed then normal. "The spindle motor is the motor that spins the disc. This is the most common problem found in DVD and CD players.
My Bose Wave Radio/CD developed this problem about a year ago. I don't use the CD player much and kept the unit clean. The disc spins but, the system does not read it. Cleaning the lens with cotton did not help.
