Am not computer saavy, have two computers and the HP into a "switcher" that then is hooked to single DSL line. Older computer has XP and the new one has Vista. New computer has two printers listed on printer section of Hardware and Sound on Control Panel - 1. Microsoft XPS Document Writer, printer status Ready, 2. HP Photosmart 2575 (set as default), printer status Offline. Printer works through old computer, will not print through new one - job spooled on queque. What the heck is the XPS Document Writer? Afraid to delete it not knowing what it is and how do I get the Photosmart Ready, i.e. change status from Offline. Please make explaination simple. Thank you for any suggestions.
I'm having the same problem as the one described in that i install the software and i'm good to go. but when i disconnect my notebook (vista OS) from the wireless network and re-connect again i still see the peinter but its offline. i cannot get it to go online. I even tried to open the printer window and click 'connect' on the menu but the 'connect' option is greyed out. So i keep having to re-install the printer every time i re-connect to the network.
Someone please help.
In Vista make sure you are logged in as a administrator whenever you make any changes.
And if not to bring the printer online you will have to right click on the printer icon and right click on Run as administrator> and then try bringing the printer online and checdk if it works.
And you can delete the Microsoft XPS Document writer it is a default printer icon installed if in case you did not have a printer installed you can store them to print later.
Now that you already have a printer you can delete the Microsoft XPS Document writer.
Good Luck

Hey jonboy - You do not want to delete it. It is automatically installed with Vista. In simple terms, you know when you go to print something and it asks you questions like print all pages, print page 1, etc? Well XPS basically is there for so when you go to print, you have the option of printing to a file instead of paper. You've always had that option ( whether or not you knew it) but this is just a new way of doing it and that's why it's listed under printers. It's sort of like a virtual printer. I'll say no more about that and just hope you understood what I said. As far as the other printer, it's already selected as default, go back in where you found the printer status, right click on your Photosmart and click on use online. That should do the trick.
I hope you understood this stuff. If this solves your problem PLEASE rate this as fixed. If you still have a problem, DON'T RATE it yet just add a comment and I'll be happy to assist you further. Thanks.

Good Day,
One thing you can try instead of deleting the doucment writer is to change the default printer. You can do this by right-clicking on the HP printer icon and selecting "set as default" from the drop down box. Also try turning the printer off and back on aswell as restaring the computer if you have'nt already. Did that printer ever work from that computer? How is it wired, by "switcher" do you mean a shared printer through you network(was printer sharing configured properly), or an A-B printer switch. Please clarify
Hope this helps for now
