Does it have a stitch length dial which ranges from 4 down to 0 and then into negative numbers? If so, the negative numbers will be reverse stitches. Some machines have this functionality and its very happy for doing mending or stitching in awkward places to sew backwards without having to hold the reverse button.
However, if yours is only sewing backwards when stitch length is set to 2, 3 or 4, then its probably a drive problem internally. Don't think your machine has a seperate motor for the feed dogs, probably a gear driven shaft in the free arm.

I'm certainly not a sewing machine expert, but am very mechanical skilled and have maintained/repaired my family's machines years ago. i did some research and from what I can see, I don't believe the feed dogs on the XL-2230 are raiseable/lowerable via any control lever. They do, as most other machines, move/feed automatically by being actuated by a cam mechanism. I see no mention of any feed dog lever/button in the manual. In case you don't have the manual, I'll post a link for it below.
Have you taken off the footplate to look under the feed dogs to see if there is any balled thread or debris preventing them from raising? That might be the cause. If not, I also heard that the dogs are spring-loaded and will not raise until the machine or handwheel is rotated and the first stich is actually "caught". Have you tried sewing with it, or turning the handwheel? Just some thoughts and hope some of this helps.
I'll also include a video, but you can skip to near the end (about the 23 minute mark), where it shows the basic procedure for cleaning the feed dog area.
Sounds like the feed dog stepper motor has gone bad. It will need to be replaced by an experienced service technician. Suggest you use an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for repair. You can find your nearest dealer from their website and use Locate a Dealer -

My Janome has a metal slide switch for lowering the feed dogs on the base of the machine in front.
Have you raised the feed downs again? Otherwise, turn off so that the current stich selected resets, and then turn on and select straight stich. Try again.
check you needle to see if it's damaged
check to see if the top thread to see if it's come off the thread take up lever
check to make sure there's no lint or loose thread in the bobbin area
Make sure your feed dogs are up. Feed dogs are moving metal parts in the needle plate that make the fabric move forward under the presser foot. Open up the shuttle box underneath the needle plate. There is a lever to the right of the the shuttle. Press the lever down and to the left to raise the feed dogs.
