I'm only getting a throughput of 4MB/s. Will cleaning the drive help? I've tried using a cleaning tape, but I'm not sure if the drive is using it as it never ejects. Interface: SCSI Host OS: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.3 (Tikanga)

Exact same problem with our Quantum SuperLoader 3 LTO-2 Tape Drive. I start the Sequential ops but when the first tape is full, the BackupExec software sends a message asking for Loading a new media instead of ejecting the tape. In fact, I think that it is the tape drive job to unload the tape when it is full.
If I eject the tape from the Backup exec job menu, it does not work at all. I have to manually move the tape from drive to slot 1 then the drive automatically move the tape from slot 2 to drive and at that time, backup exce continues the backup. Our backup takes 3 tapes so we have to manually move all 3 tapes manually. It is really strange. Looks like a lot of people are having this problem.
I did a lot of research on quantum sites and symantec sites but nothing so far.
thanks to anybody who can help on this one.

you need to get to the underside of the tape drive itself, there is usually a manual tape release mechanism built in however it usually requires the user to wind the tape off off the spools until it is fully disengaged from the spool and then to unload the tape there are usually magnetic servos and lever arms that need to be moved to release the tape itself, without being able to see the drive myself I could not begin to explain further as each manufacturer's mechanism is different, however the tape release looks like a recessed screw on the underside.
it is possible that if you manage to rewind the tape using the manual release, that reconnecting the drive may allow the drive to eject the tape using the eject button on the front panel

OPEN YOUR DRIVE REMOVE THE FRONT PANEL AND COVER, CHECK IF THE GUIDE TIPE IS FREE INTO THE BACK IMPULSOR, IF IS THIS TRUE YOU ARE ABLE TO ROTATE THE RIGHT SIDE GEAR CAREFULY WHITH A LITLE TOOL, ROTATE UNTIL THE TAPE EJECT.

Hello, on some of the older DLT drives, if you press the 'eject' button several times the drive firmware attempts an unload operation. I'm not sure of the number of times you have to press it though...try pressing it in and releasing it 3 times (in quick succession). If that doesn't do anything, try 7 times.
It's worth a try!

This is the official Dell support page for that unit. that particular drive error is most likely an interface error. here is the link:
