I believe there are two separate issues here.
The asterisk in the lower left corner of the screen is the low-battery indicator. Put in a fresh set of batteries and that will go away.
As for not getting the correct results, are you sure you have all the modes set correctly? Could you post a sample problem, with the results you get and the results you expect to get?

What is CPT on TI Calculator

"ComPuTe". On TI financial calculators you have to press the CPT button before pressing the button for the value you're solving for. (N, I, PV, PMT, or FV). On an HP calculator, you just press the N-I-PV-PMT-FV button without making any entry in order to solve for the desired value.

Hp 30b cpt button

The CPT button is a feature of TI calculators. HP calculators don't need it. To compute a result, simply press the appropriate button without making any data entry.

For example, to compute PMT after entering n, i, PV, and FMT, simply press the PMT button, instead of pressing CPT then PMT as with a TI calculator.

Calculating PV where n=5; i=6%; $18,400=pmt; 0=FV.

Check to make sure you have the proper value set for payments-per-year.

Computing N in a TVM calculation (receive Error 5 message)

Hey,
Just found out the answer!
Apparently you can't have both FV and PV positive. Try the calculation with one of them being negative.

Solving for n

Are you sure the PV and PMT have different signs? One (and only one) of them must be negative.

Simple loan payment

Are you putting 30x12=360 for N? Since you have monthly payments, you have to compute it a little different. Also, you have to find the effective monthly interest rate. 1.0575^(1/12) = .4669839%.

Another way is to enter 30 for N and 5.57 for I/Y, and change P/Y to 12.

Hope this helps!

I do not have the directions and need to figure out how to calculate mortgages.

Here is the link to a guide;

http://www.buec.udel.edu/bowersh/finc311_F04/Documents_f04/Quick%20Guide.pdf
Set PV=-$100,000
[2nd] P/Y= 12.00
N= 12 x 30 = 360, (i assume it's 30 Y amortization)
I/Y = 5.75%
FV = 0
[CPT] PMT

Hope this helps
