Brother MFC-7340 Squeeks loudly. I have change both toner cart and drum unit twice, but the squeeking persists. Any ideas for a fix?

I have tried to isolate the noise but have been unable to locate it other than the upper feed system.

  • Anonymous Dec 05, 2011

when you say "upper feed system" do you mean the document feeder on top of machine?

No, it appears to be the internal feed path below the doc feeder and inside the chassis. I removed what I could from the back but I still wasn't able to identify the specific roller causing the problem. I tried contacting Brother but all I could get was their entry level troubleshooting that kept repeating instructions for replacing the drum and toner units.

Ok. one item i have seen cause a problem in that area is a white gear that is attached by a screw. turn your printer around and remove the rear cover, then the next inner cover thats called a chute assembly. then you should be looking at the fuser cover assembly. usually black in color and has the exit sensor lever visible. thats the piece that has the white gear which is on the right side as your looking from the rear. pop fuser cover out and remove screw from gear making sure to note how gear is originally installed as it must not be put on backwards. after removing gear, clean the gear shaft and re-install gear making sure screw is snud and flush against gear. also make sure it rotates freely. re-assemble and see if that takes care of problem.

good luck,
razors

I pulled the covers out and removed the fuser. I then cleaned off the gear and used air to blow out the fuser. and parts. The fuser felt a little tight but everything looked pretty clean. I have reassembled it to the 2 covers, which I will finish in about 2 days. I will then smoke test and let you know what happens. Do you happen to know what kind of lubricant that they were using on the gear and the fuser?

    high- temp silicone based lube.

Error message "put the black toner cartridge back in"

I got this same error message on a newly acquired Brother DCP-7040 that I purchased used off of ebay.

As I was troubleshooting this unit (that I bought untested off of ebay - hey gambling has paid off handsomely for me many times before!), this error message kept popping up.

I checked the COUNTERS (page & Drum life) and found out that the DRUM had 0% life left. BUT, the reason it showed ZERO was because this unit did not have any drum! The toner cartridge (TN-360) needs to sit WITHIN the drum (DR-360) on this DCP-7040 unit, as well as in models DCP-7030, MFC-7340, MFC-7345C, and MFC-7440N.

So perhaps some of these "put the black toner cartridge back in" problems could be related to the DRUM (or lack thereof). A possible tipoff (since the toner cartridge actually does slide into the unit much like other units that do not use Brother's DRUM carrier) seems to be the relative ease with which the toner cartridge slides into the DCP-7040 and really doesn't seem to "lock" into position real firmly.

I cannot get the toner cartridge out of the machine!!!!

Here are the steps to change the toner cartridge.

1. Open the front cover (there is a handle just above the manual feed and just below the screen and buttons).
2. Inside there will be a handle facing you; this is the cartridge assembly (toner cartridge + drum unit). Pull the handle straight out. There are no buttons or switches to press, simply pull the handle and the assembly will slide out.
3. On the side of the assembly there will be a small green tab. Press it to release the toner cartridge.
4. Pull the toner up and out to separate the drum unit. (DO NOT touch the imaging roller on the drum! It is a green or blue tube in the front of the drum unit).
5. Put your new cartridge into the drum unit.
6. Slide the cartridge assembly back into the printer until it clicks into place.
7. Close the front cover.*

*If the front cover doesn't close easily, the cartridge assembly is not installed correctly. If this occurs, take the assembly out and reinsert it.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

MFC 7340 - I changed the toner cartridge, and cleaned the corona wire as instructed. When I put the drum unit back in, I get the message "Open front cover clean corona wire". I clean the corona...

The drum unit may be at it's end. There is a report you can print that will say "Drum" life at the bottom of the page. I think it's the "User Settings" or something. Though it sounds like you can't print to find this out anyway....Do you recall how many times you've changed the toner without changing the drum? Usually you can expect about 4-5 toners on every drum. Once the drum's photo sensitive coating wears off it is incapable of charging correctly to print. Might just be time for regular maintenance. Just bought a Brother MFC-7340 but there is toner all over the printed pages. Is it possible the drum and/or toner supplied was damaged?

yes. that is possible. if the machine was jossled around, the toner contained in the drum unit could leak out between the connecting points of the toner and drum unit. May cleaer it self up, or may not.

Brother MCF-7340 first time toner replacement

If this model comes with the drum separately of the cartridge, only replace the cartridge. There's no need to change it every time. until prints start to get lines or dots. Don't expose the drum to light too much.
