I had my Timeshift stop on me and the tv said it needed to initialize the HDD and lists it is a Error Code 101. I formatted the drive but it will only last for about 10-20 minutes and then it will stop again. It sounded like LG service center didn't know what to do. Is this a problem with the hard drive? I have also heard a metal grinding sound almost like bad metal bells from behind the tv. I can stop the sound if I turn off the tv and turn it back on. The 42LB1DR is over a year old so no warrenty. If it is the hard drive, can I replace it and what type does it take?

I just got of the phone with a manager at LG and they want to send out a technician to figure out the problem. I made it more than clear that their are more than just a handful of us experiencing this problem, and they are "looking into it".
I think we all need to call in and complain, and drive the fact home that this is not a single incident, but that there are many of us having this problem. Point them to this forum, and tell them your faith in LG is waning. A threat of informing the Better Business Bureau never hurt either. That's what I did, and now they are looking into it more, and are going to cover the parts on the service call, so that my expense for their problem is covered, even though my warranty is expired.
If we want this fixed, and prevented in the future, we have to call and bitch, that is the bottom line. It is unfortunate, but that is how it has to work sometimes.
Here is the number for their customer service: 800-243-0000

mine did the same thing once, I unplugged it long enough to make sure it shuts down all the way and let it reset itself. Turned it back on and it was and is fine [it's been 2 mos. now] That worked this time.
Last time one of my kids spilled something down the back and it gradually went out. 600.00 to have the part replaced.

This is almost certainly the device that sends electricity to the the plasma in the panel after failing. Bring to your local repair shop and expect to pay 300-400 parts and 100-200 labour.
Cheers,
Stephen

There are 4 capacitors on the power supply board that need to be replace. They are in the same area, same color, look for bulged caps.
