On HL 1440 Laser Printer, ready and alarm lights (red) on control panel are lit.
The red lights for ready and alarm are on. When I hit the reset button, they blink green and the printer sounds like it wants to work. Then the lights go back red and nothing happens. When I open the door to the space where the toner cartridge is and then shut the door, the lights blink green and the printer will print, however the page comes out full of gray streaks. How do I fix this?

First: Soft Reset 1. Open front cover. 2. Hold down button located under LED's until all LED's
are lit. 3. Release button and make sure drum LED is off, then 4. Close cover
Second: Factory Reset 1. Turn the printer off. 2. Hold in the circular button on the front panel of the printer. 3. Turn the printer back on. 4. When the DRUM light is lit by itself let go of the button. 5. Hold in the circular button on the front panel again. 6. Once the Alarm light comes on, let go of the button. This will perform a factory reset on the printer.

Because I was getting gray shading on my pages and data was still being printing, I decided to change the toner cartridge. Now the pages are clean and white and all the lights function properly. Most cartridges that are running on empty don't print any data at all or at least print the data at the top of the page and gradually gets fainter sp? on the page. Who would have thought just by changing the cartridge would solve the problem? So glad that's all it was........wasn't excited about having to buy a new printer.
According to the operation manual: If alarm light and data light blink every 5 seconds- TONER LOW (purchase more toner and have it ready when the 'toner empty' is indicated). If alarm light and data light stay lit- TONER EMPTY (replace toner cartrige with new one).
tray this The procedure for the factory inspection mode is as follows. (1) Turn off the printer power switch, open the front cover, and remove the drum unit. (2) Turn on the printer power switch while holding down the control panel button. The Drum LED comes ON. (3) Lightly press the panel button again. (4) Check that all the LEDs except the Ready LED are OFF. ✒ If the toner sensor is ON, the Drum LED stays ON (error). ✒ If the front registration sensor is ON, the Alarm LED stays ON (error). ✒ If the upper paper cassette sensor is ON, the Data LED stays ON. (error) (HL-1250 only) NOTE: The lower paper cassette solenoid is turned ON/OFF even if the panel button is not pressed. (5) Check the rear registration sensor. ✒ If the rear registration sensor is stuck backwards, the Ready LED stays OFF. (error) ✒ If the rear registration sensor is moved back and forth, the Ready LED comes ON at any time. (error) (6) Check that only the Data LED comes ON while pressing the panel button. ✒ If the paper eject sensor is ON, the Drum LED stays ON. (error) ✒ If the lower paper cassette registration sensor is ON, the Ready LED stays ON. (error) If the registration sensor is ON, the lower paper cassette solenoid is turned ON, and the Ready LED also stays ON. (HL-1250 only) NOTE: The lower paper cassette solenoid is turned ON/OFF even if the panel button is not pressed. (7) Install the drum unit. ✒ Check that the Drum LED goes ON and the Ready LED goes OFF. (8) Close the front cover. (9) Continue to press the control panel button. ✒ Check that the Data LED stays OFF. (10) Release the panel button. (11) If all the sensors except the toner sensor are correct, the printer goes back to the Ready status. If any error is detected, the printer stays in the inspection mode.
