I keep getting frost buildup in the ice despenser chute and thus the ice gets trapped in the chute when dispensing. I think there is a problem with the chute flapper door not closing all the way (staying open slightly) and causing the frost buildup. I've noticed that when a dispense is triggered, the flapper door opens quickly, but closes very slowly and maybe not all the way. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix?
I have the exact same issue. Repair guy just came out and wanted $225 to replace flapper.

Thanks for responding. I see what you mean. I found the solinoid that opens/closes the chute door and noticed the shaft was not smooth when retracting out/in, so I lubed the shaft of the solinoid. Now it works a little better, but the flapper still will not close all the way. I think the solinoid is just weak in being able to retract the shaft all the way back in. I also noticed the yoke on the end of the shaft was a little worn, but I don't think this is contributing to the problem. I think I need a new soliniod motor and yoke. I had the exact same problem. My neighbor has the same refrigerator, and told me that there is a solenoid in the door, behind the panel where you select between water, crushed or cubed ice. You can carefully remove that panel to expose the solenoid, which is on the right side of the dispenser water line. I have the model GE GSS25. The plunger on the solenoid gets rusty buildup on the outside of it from the moisture and water splashing from the dispenser. You might try wiping the exterior of the solenoid, and working it up and down so that it moves freely. If not, it's a cheap replacement part you can order from GE. The solenoid shuts the trap door which opens when you get ice from the dispenser. If the solenoid plunger does not move freely, then the trap door hangs open, and warm moist air enters the freezer through the ice shute, causing frost.
This sounds like your ice may be melting and freezing around the chute. You may need to replace that rubber gasket on the chute. Otherwise, if you use a lot of crushed ice, that will build up badly on the chute and you can manually clean that off. I hope this helps you!
Can you give more details?
If the ice chute is frosting up, chute door is not sealing, air , with moisture, is getting in and freezing. An ice cube getting trapped by the door will cause this also. Either case, replace door and delay mechanism.
remove the bottom tray that you sit your glass on, push down on the bottom of the trim arround the despenser, lift outward then upward on the trim panel, have a piece of duct tape handy to tape the panel out of your way to gain access to the assembly
first check would be to see if the flapper door is closing all the way in the dispenser area. best way is to remove the ice bucket and shine a flashlight from the front up into the disp door area and look for light around the door from inside the chute.
another check would be to make sure the door delay mechanism is connected an not allowing the dispenser door to close to fast trapping a cubes in the door and causing an air leak in the chute..
Keep in mind if you use alot of crushed ice frost build up is faster than with just cubed.
Open the freezer door and look down the ice chute while you shine a flashlite up the dispenser cute from the outside. If you see light around the chute door, it needs to be replaced. The problem you describe is almost always air laekage around that flap. Post back if you need more help.
