IEEE 1394 or firewire is the only reliable method.
If you just want to get the footage to a computer for playback only then:
There are USB converters on the market.
Most covert the files to non-editable codecs so if you wish to edit the footage:
You could transcode those file back to DV but this is a bad workflow.Having a computer with a firewire port and appropriate editing software is your best option.

I dnt hav usb cable for my handy cam DCR-HC52E ...

Product Summary
4-pin to 4-pin IEEE 1394 iLink FireWire Cable dv out to laptop Connect and transfer home movie from your digital camcorder to Notebook computer.

You will need a Firewire port on your computer, also known as a DV port or IEEE 1394, to use this cable. This is NOT a USB cable.

This DV cable will connect your laptop (notebook)
NOTE: for some models, becuase of no DV jack on the body, this cable connects to docking station/cradle instead of connecting directly to your camcorder.

How to connect my dv via usb

The USB connection will only download still images from the camcorder. You need a firewire cable and card in your computer to download video. If your computer has a firewire port already, you just need the cable. Hope this helps =]

I want to download material from my Sony DCR-TRV17E MiniDV camcorder to my Windows 7 laptop. Can you help with connectivity issues please?

This type of camera downloads video with a Firewire (Sony call this i.Link) connection. Some mini-DV and D8 cameras have a USB connection which is used for stills ONLY.

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other. My camera came with the correct lead.

There is a Sony tutorial page for downloading video to computer at THIS LINK You will need to select Windows as the operating system, then Mini-DV as the camera type, then select the type of connection. As you will see, the USB option warns that it won't work with many cameras, and you are strongly recommended to use i.Link (which everyone else calls Firewire).

Windows 7 compatibility- Sony say it is compatible, but "Windows 7 needs to be preinstalled at the factory" (meaning installed on the computer) rather than an Update to Vista or XP performed by the user. You must also use i.Link, not USB.

I am trying to connect my Sony DCR-TRV10E to my home computer via ilink-USB cable, but my computer does not recognize the Camcorder.... I guess this is due to missing drivers for Windows 7. Can anyone help...

USB and i.Link cables are not the same thing. What Sony call i.Link everyone else calls Firewire, DV or IEEE1394, and it is a different standard from USB with different connectors.

This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (DV) connection. Some mini-DV cameras only use the USB connection (if they have one) for stills and can only download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file. If you are trying to use a USB cable for video download, then it won't work for this camera. The driver is not the problem, this model is not on the Sony list of cameras that will download video over USB.
