since the unit doesn't have a base map it needs to be loaded with the base map so send it for a service so that the base map could be added.

SOURCE: Unit Map

You can download the US basemap for the 500 at
http://www.megaupload.com/it/?d=EJTNQH03
Rename it BASEMAP.MGI
Then copy it in the directory "background maps" in the SD card of your 500, by using a SD card reader/writer.
Insert the SD card in your 500 and connect it to your PC; then turn it on;it will turn on regularly, because the basemap in the card will be detected; turn it to USB file transfer mode, and copy the basemap from the SD card to the directory "background maps" of the 500.

The necessary map software is not installed - did you buy the unit with software?

Hi Guys: On turning on my explorist 400 a message appears. UNIT CURRENTLEY CONTAINS NO MAPS! INITIATING MAP UPLOAD This message wont go away, and all buttons refuse to work. The only way I can turn it off...

Jeff, I had the same problem with my explorist 500. Your unit lost the "BASEMAP.MGI " file. You will need to get a copy of that file. Then install it.
Try this site http://imhz.com/2006/05/my-explorist-is-screwed.html
(I would recomend all explorist GPS owners copy and save that file and store it in a safe place. I have mine on a thumb drive).

NMEA communication does not work ( but file transfer is OK)

Try rebooting windows, with gps off connect the cable to gps.

Go out side get a good gps signals on nav menu.

Set the gps communications menu to , nmea, 2.1

Plug the device into a good usb port.

If you look under modems, in control panel you should see a new modem called explorist xxx

If you look at the properties for that you can see its com port number.

I just tried this program http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPS/

and it views nmea from the explorist, just set the com port to the one in the explorist modem .

No map

Install the firmware again:

Go to: http://www.magellangps.com/support/product.asp?prodid=1114

Or, if this doesn´t work, go to www.magellangps.com, click on "support", click on "legacy products" (left) and click on "eXplorist 210 Europe" (do NOT click on "eXplorist 210 North America")

On this page click under Updates/Upgrades on "version 2.57", and follow the instructions. You will have to register your GPS, register it under a European country.

After you have installed the firmware you will have the basemap and some new windows on the GPS. Good luck and enjoy!
