So, if I understand correctly, you had a virus run amuck in your system, and now you need help in reformating the hard drive--basically help in reinstalling the operating system (OS) again?

Have you tried using an anti-virus software to clean up your system? What specific status is your system in currently (running or not)? What OS?

  • Anonymous Sep 30, 2008

For just the motherboard drivers, try this link:

    http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Downloa...

If you need guidance on reformatting, let me know.

    Hope this helps.

IF and only IF you really need to reformat your harddrive due to the virus issue, what drivers you download would really depend upon what operating system you are going to reinstall.

After reinstalling the OS, you will then install the basic MB drivers, and anything else that is need to run any additional hardware (cd rom, etc), although newer operating systems such as Windows XP usually already have the drivers, and readily identify most basic hardware without a need to get additional drivers. Then I would also suggest that you install a good anti-virus and firewall as well as turn on the one on your operating system too.

I dissected the drivers list and can further explain what each driver will do, but first need to know your operating system in order to simplify what I need to explain to you.

Some of the drivers would only need to be installed if you have the hardware or need to install it, for example the one called "VIA VT823x PCI FAST ETHERNET ADAPTER". This one would be used only if you have the ethernet connection or intend on using the network capability of your motherboard. You can still install all of the drivers. It wouldn't hurt, but specifically to your operating system install these:

    1. THIS IS SPECIFIC TO YOUR IDE CONNECTIONS:

VIA Service Pack (4 in 1)

    2. THIS IS FOR A NETWORK CONNECTION:

VIA VT823x PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

    3. THIS MODEM DRIVERS:

    PCtel CNR Modem Driver

4.THIS IS FOR YOUR ONBOARD SOUND, ALTHOUGH IT DOESN'T SAY THAT IT APPLIES TO WIN XP:

VIA AC'97 Audio Codec Sound Driver

I am pretty sure that I have used the same Codec above in XP and it worked fine.

    5.USB PORTS:

VIA USB 2.0 Host Controller Driver. (ONE THAT SAYS VERSION 2.44)

    6.MONITOR/MOTHERBOARD DRIVER:

S3 ProSavage Display Driver P4M266_KM266-P (ONE THAT SAYS VERSION 13.94.17)

    Last thought:

For anti-virus I had good luck with F-Secure (sometimes hard to find; at least in the U.S. unless you download it) and second McAfee. Pay more if need be, and get the office suite versions anytime you purchase anti-virus, because it will have firewall and other add-ons with them. For strictly firewall software I really like the Webroot line. In my experience both the F-Secure and Webroot take up less system resources (slows down system less) in my experience with McAfee coming somewhere behind. I try and get a different anti-virus each year to test. I am currently using one that worked well a few years ago, but slows my system down now, although it is rather thorough, and user friendly. Hope this all helps you out.

I lost my drivers and manual for my P4Vmm2

Hi, The elitegroup webiste is http://www.ecs.com.tw From there you can click on the downloads tab in the top right corner. This page will then bring up a pane on the left hand side of the screen where you can enter the details of the product you are looking for. So on the first drop menu select motherboad. Second Drop menu select Socket 478 from the bottom of the list. Third drop menu scroll down until you see your model number (P4Vmm2) The fourth drop menu will then ask you for a version. I would have dirctly posted you a link to the downloads page but i was unsure of your motherboard version. If you know the version number you can put it in there and it will take you to a page listing the drivers you are after and the manual. If you do not know the version of your motherboard model you can download a free program called SIW which will tell you the details of your computer. This Program is available for download at: http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html Its a 1.3Mb download which you can install and run and click on the motherboard tab for a full list of details on your motherboard. Hopefully you can see the motherboard version written somewhere on your motherboard though. Hope this helps, Daniel.
