We just got a Sharp ER-A440 register (used) and need to reprogram it and get the interface cable RS-232C. We are overwhelmed with how to use this, can you help?

Turn key to PGM2 mode 1. type 2614 2. press . (decimal point) 3. press X (next to decimal point - on USA model, labelled @/FOR) 4. now type the line number you want to change e.g 4 for fourth line 5. press X (next to decimal point) 6. now type the new message using the alphabet on the front edge of each button. If someone has removed the letters, you can find a layout in the operating manual under "USING CHARACTER KEYS ON THE KEYBOARD" 7. ST (subtotal) 8. TL (cash button)

Windows Vista is the last operating system that you would want to use for legacy hardware -legacy being anything that requires a usb to rs 232c adaptor. Scripts required to make this work would drive you to an abacus. If you need to have a cash register input on a permanent basis I would recommend another operating system, even a real old computer would be easier to interface or you could use the modem output of the Samsung to connect to your laptop in a LAN configuration maybe even with a null modem connection. Vista will drive you crazy with permission denials with cries of cyber-sodomy with an analog interface directly connected. The Samsung 755 has a USB interface but since you don't have the correct input for your laptop it will be far easier to use the cash register an an old (cheap) computer with an RS 232 interface and connect it to your laptop with a wired or wireless LAN configuration. Those USB to DB9 0r DB25 or PS2 adaptors still cannot match the speed parameters that the laptop US Host controller would ever find acceptable. Windows XP or 2000 might be a consideration but Vista is already neurotic enough without interfaces it was not designed to accomodate. 2. Master reset (All memory clear)
There are two possible methods to perform a master reset.
· MRS-1
Used to clear all memory contents and return machine back to its
initial settings and return keyboard back to default keyboard layout.
Procedure
1) Unplug the AC cord from the wall outlet.
2) Set the MODE switch to the (SRV¢) position.
3) Plug in the AC cord to the wall outlet.
4) While holding down JOURNAL FEED key, turn to (SRV) position
from (SRV¢) position.
· MRS-2
Used to clear all memory and keyboard contents.
This reset returns all programming back to defaults. The keyboard
must be entered by hand.
This reset is used if an application needs different keyboard layout
other than that supplied by a normal MRS-1.
Procedure
1) Unplug the AC cord from the wall outlet.
2) Set the MODE switch to the (SRV¢) position.
3) Plug in the AC cord to the wall outlet.
4) While holding down JOURNAL FEED key and RECEIPT FEED
key, turn to (SRV) position from (SRV¢) position.
5) Key position assignment:
After the execution of MRS-2, only the RECEIPT FEED and
JOURNAL FEED keys can remain effective on key assignment.
Any key can be assigned on any key position on the main keyboard
