I've solved my problem - thanks to a suggestion on another site. Apparently the machine is sensitive to the type of disc when it has a problem - I inserted an identical make and type of disc (RW in my case) and it then completed its 'restore to normal operation' and the error msg went away.

Also suggested but didn't work in my case was opening the flap on the front, and with the machine OFF, press and hold STOP and Channel UP.

Hope this helps

Just to clarify what JROlfe2003 had said to perform what was decribed you have to

The unit is carrying out the recovery process. Do the following to eject the disc.
(1) Press [O/I] on the main unit to switch the unit to standby. If the unit does not switch to standby,
press and hold [O/I] on the main unit for about 10 seconds. The unit is forcibly switched to
standby.
(2) While the unit is off, press and hold the stop button and [CH, up] on the main unit at the same time for about 5 seconds. Remove the disc.

U61 ERROR ON DISPLAY

U-61 is a hardware error code. Usually means main board failure, however have found that a bad changer can also trigger that code since it connects directly to the main board.

U61 error problem

The manual refers to the U61 as being a recovery mode. Have you left it at U61 for a period of time while it tries to recover?
U61 ≥There was a power failure or the AC plug was disconnected while the unit was on. The unit is
carrying out its recovery process. This process restores the unit to normal operation. The unit is not
broken. Wait until the message disappears.
You could always try to force it into standby mode and back out again:
Press [í/I, POWER] on the main unit to switch the unit to standby.
Now press [í/I, POWER] on the main unit again to turn the unit on.
If that doesn't take care of it, everything thing I've found points toward a replacement of components inside the system by a repair service. Hopefully you are still under warranty!

Error code u61 will not clear, unable to reset the DMR-EZ45VEBS

Hi, there was no solution to my problem with the error code U61, having talked to a Panasonic repair center it would cost £180.00 to fix this unit as the board and DVD recorder have to be replaced as one unit. It would cost me around £160.00 to buy a new one so there was no point in having it repaired.
