Unit will not stop

Dear Hal,
Here is some generic information about shredders that may help you.
Most of the shredders have a micro switch that "senses" if the paper has been introduced to the shredding slot. These micro switches are activated by a little arm/leveler that touches the paper and activates de contact inside the shredder housing. Also, note that some shredders may have an optical sensor that may be "clogged" with paper dust.
If you shredder does not stop, the sensor may be stuck in a on position, or, in case it has optical sensor may be detecting dust or a little piece of paper may be blocking the optical sensor and keeping the motor running.
I hope this gives you some light in further investigating your problem.
Good luck!

I jammed it with too much paper

Check the Power Ensure that the shredder top is firmly placed in the shredder basket if the unit will not operate. If the top is not in place the feeder will not work and accept any paper. Make sure it is firmly plugged into the wall outlet and that the outlet is active. Rest the Shredder Let the shredder cool down if the shredder has been running continuously for a long time. It may have overheated and needs to be left in the off position for at least 30 minutes to reset. Verify the basket is empty or not too full as that will cause the shredder to deactivate. Clear Paper Jam Rotate the shredder into "Auto" and reverse to loosen any paper jam that is stopping the gears. Pull out any papers that are sticking out from the shredder feeder. If there is no progress then unplug the shredder and remove the shredder top from the bin. Turn it upside down and use tweezers to free any paper that is blocking the gear. Auto Mode Not Working Select the "Auto" option and feed paper into the center of the feeder tray if the shredder is only working in reverse mode. The sensor is located in the middle of the feeder tray and could be blocked by jammed paper. Use an index card to firmly unblock any paper that could be blocking the sensor.

Doesn't work in auto position but works in reverse

Most likely your optic sensor has something in front of it. Clean out the unit really well. It does take time, about 3 different screwdrivers, lon pliers and tweezers and a vacuum or compressed air. After that, learning more new words and swearing to god you will never let this happen again until the third time.

Auto mode the blades continue to turn

Unplug it! Clean the optics in the center where paper is inserted. You can do this with a cotton swab. Check to make sure no paper has lodged itself in the infeed center. If no optics, then check to see if a metal arm that activates the machine isn't stuck in the on position. This will be in the center of where paper is inserted. This repair might require the cover to be removed. Remember, unplug the shredder.

Shredder runs continuously in AUTO position. It appears to use a photoelectric sensor for AUTO activation. I cleaned the window once with a swab and windex. It worked for a few days but is doing it again...

There are three reasons why:
1. paper particles or oil are still causing the optics to think you are inserting paper. Remove cover and clean thoroughly!
2. Optics are misaligned.
3. Optics are defective.

Some shredders have optical sensors with a dark sensor LED on one side of the slot, and a clear transmitter LED on the other. You will most likely have to disassemble the shredder housing to clean them.
MAKE SURE TO UNPLUG THE UNIT.
Generally you will find screws on the underside of the shredder unit, with one screw covered by a "warranty void if broken" sticker. Remove these screws, separate the housing, and clean the optical sensor pair with windex or isopropyl rubbing alcohol. If your shredder has a CD slot, it may have its own sensor pair. Be sure to clean both pairs of sensors, as the CD sensors seem to be the ones that have the most trouble because of small aluminum debris.

Shredder won't shut off after paper goes thru

Note that the sensors that tells the shredder to stop are underneath the unit.

Pull out the tray, put the unit on the side and you'll see two places where there are two flat-head phillips screws holding the optical sensors in place (no need to unscrew them). Just wipe the visible part of those two sensors with a rag.

The sensors that are readily visible on top of the unit tells the shredder when to start.
