Hi, just acquired a second hand laserjet 2100, all plugged in but won't switch on at all. (came free from friend so no major gripe) Checked socket and plug connections on both ends. Can elec lead be faulty? Is there a trick? Or is it just dead?
Yep, the power cable can be faulty, test a different one on a different socket. Try also playing with the power connector on the printer.
If the power cable is fused, like for example in UK, then check the fuse.
If it still does not give any sign of life, then there is a fault on the power supply board, inside the printer, usually the power supply fuse. Part is about $45 refurbished/$55 original .
If the problem is not the fuse you will need to get a technician testing on board component, and probably replacing a faulty resistor or capacitor.
