Question about Porter Cable Portable Generator BSV750

Throttle on generator question

Hello, I have a Porter Cable 7500 watt generator (B&S Vanguard engine). The engine has a throttle control and also an Idle Controle switch (which is "off" as the manual it says not to use if you're using a Refridgerator/TV on the generator). May be a basic question, but how do I determine what the throttle should be set to? I currently have it running on full, but with only a fridge and freezer plugged in. Is there a general rule of thumb what the throttle should be set to, what i should listen for, etc...? Thanks!

The idle control switch allows the generator to go into idle when there is no demand form the appliances connected. This saves gas and increases the life of the generator. Damage can occur for some appliances like a refrigerator/freezer because the voltage and frequency are not prepared for the load resulting in a low voltage bad startup that will damage the appliance. Suggest that you leave the idle control switch off while any motor/electronic devices are connected.

The throttle control is likely a choke function for starting. These generators are designed for only one running speed to produce the necessary 60 cycles per second and voltage.

Will not start

That is either valve timing or a failed ignition stator. The stator will send the fire signal to the spark plug at the wrong time and hence the backfire.

This is for the Porter Cable H650IS-W-1 Contractor Generator. It has an idle/RPM control solenoid that adjusts to the load on the generator. I can see that the solenoid works because 9VDC applied to it...

I do not think that your generator has a voltage regulator. The solenoid is for idle only when there is no demand (power being used). You can verify this by examing the governor spring /tension adjuster on the engine. Idle control switch on panel and the assembly board control the solenoid. When the assembly board fails generally the generator will function the same however there will be no idle. I have checked with Dewalt and parts are available however expensive. If idle is the only problem you may consider ignoring issue. If there is another problem with gen. please email.

Your generators take ordinary 10W30 motor oil.
We use these things on the job.
Don't turn engine upside down or on its side to drain oil, or oil will run into carburetor

My porter cabe 5500 only runs on choke

Because it running lean, too much air in the air/fuel mixture. I can only give a suggestion and it's a rule of thumb I follow regarding basic internal combustion tuning. With this condition I locate the fuel adjustment screw, usually located after the throttle plate (butterfly) which controls the amount of fuel into the mixture.

I would set it up to run richer then open the choke until it idles effortlessly, without any assistance. When it's too rich, the engine's revolution would be to high and probably cause it to smoke a little and I back off the adjuster. The best level is that it shouldn't stumble and cut off. Once this is optimal, hard starting and unassisted idling should be eliminated.

More than likely the throttle valve is stuck closed and the engin isn't getting air and is now flooded, Remove spark plug overnight to allow gas to evap. Spay the carb and lincage with WD 40 to clean everything up; check throttle funtionality re assemble the next day. Prime wih two squirts if your machine has a priming bulb. Pull on the cord and start a digging!

I can not find the positive and negative terminals/leads on my porter cable 7500 watt BSV750-W generator. I need to flash it as it has sat in storage for two years.

Very hard to start

make sure choke is closed all the way.
filters are clean [if any]
or maybe to much choke, try with throttle wide open.
check plug to see if it is wet or not.
if dry it will need choke, if wet it will need throttle wide open.once starts, slow revs.
if plug is dry try a little shot of gas in cyl.
